Chickens and coyotes...

I found the key to keeping my chickens and ducks safe is electric net fencing. Looks like a volleyball net, and each horizontal wire is electrified. I have coyotes, bobcat, bear and foxes all around, and have not lost a bird in 3 years. I get it from Premier1supplies.com

I was thinking of doing the same with chicken wire and plastic posts. I did not know there was a product out there for the purpose. I take it you don't have hawks and owls?

That won't work. Too much total resistance. The netting has strands of wire (usually stainless). Last time I purchased the netting it was something like $1/ft: come in 162' (?) lengths; I run two (have had up to about 50 chickens in such a space, with the coop being pretty much maxed out for roost space.

After 5 1/2 years of moving the Run (every two to three months, depending on how many layers I have [their numbers fluctuate]) I'm about done, it's a lot of work. I'm going to run field fencing and dogs (still use coops, and still open/close at night).

I'll toss this out as I was thinking about doing it, but never got around to actually test it. Robert Plamandon (sp?) ran electrified wire around the bottom of his coops (I set mine up this way but never really got around to putting power to it and relying only on that single wire- I have customers, so getting wiped out is a bit more problematic). He says that losses were really low. Coops didn't even have doors on them. The idea is that things come crawling up and sniff around and paw and hit that wire. My test was to put a piece of raw meat out in a cage that had an opening and an electrified wire running along the bottom: I have a small "D" cell (6) fencer (meant for strip grazing) that I was going to use (I used it on my broiler pen and didn't have any losses, though I didn't have an open door on it.
