We've been clearing about 7 acres on top of the ridge for a potential home site. I finally cut some of the mountain cedar (ashe juniper) below the dropoff toward the creek so that we can actually see further than 100 yards. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

We've got lots of live oak, post oak, cedar elm and other smaller tree species that can be seen after the cedar has been cut down. I despair at ever being able to burn all the piles we've made, however. /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

Well, here's the picture, looking southwest toward the Colorado River valley.

And here's a shot of Larry leading our pickup down the 1000' trail we cut from the creek up to the clearing. The tractor driver is my brother Bob.

Nice looking place you got there BillG, I used to live out west of Austin a little ways (Bee Caves), and that kind of country looks pretty familiar. Good luck on getting rid of that Cedar, it seems that for every one you cut, two more come up in its place/w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif.

Yep, it looks like a nice place - kind of makes me homesick. I used to spend a lot of time on a little ranch in Jonestown.

Ron and David,

So you used to live near Austin and moved away?/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
Maybe because of all those mountain cedars?/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Well, I ended up south of Houston for about 15 years because of a job. Yuck! I've been up here in NH almost that long, except for a couple of years in Singapore. I love the Texas Hill Country, but I'm apparently much better adapted to the climate up here and we don't have cedar... I'll be down over the 4th for a wedding and family reunion - I wish I could bring our weather...

I moved to East Texas, as Austin was getting a little bit too busy for me. I commute to work in Tyler, which is a pretty good sized town, but the traffic is nothing like it was getting to be in Austin. Also like raising the kids in a small town and being able to buy acreage at less than the $10,000 per acre that seems to be the going rate around Austin. There are some things I miss about the hill country, most notably the really clean looking creeks and lakes. Out here in East Texas, there are creeks, but they look alot more like coffee with creamer than they do anything I might consider swimming in. Life is a series of compromises I guess. Good luck with your place.

The hill country is one of my favorite spots in our great state of Texas. I have a bunch of those cedar elms up here in north Texas, and I really like them. However the biggest hills we have in my area are maybe 100 feet tall. Some those hills down around Leakey look like mountains instead of hills.
