Mike,

You're right. Here's a story Deaths of three men prompt Wisconsin to look for connection to fatal brain disease that's in our local paper today. This has been quite the story all year around here. There have been at least two special hunts this summer to try to determine exactly where these infected deer are.

CWD, what fun that has been for the deer industry. There has been no cases reported in NY or PA and so far only 8 states have found CWD in deer. NY has shut down their borders so that no deer or elk can be brought into the state. I have an article about it I have to find but there was some state agency that knew they had CWD and sold off animals to zoo's and farms and such like because they didn't think it was anything serious at the time. CWD has been around since the 30's and even the 3 people that died was a long time ago and so far are the only cases any one has heard of and there is no proof CWD was the cause of their problems. No one knows much about it yet or even how to test live animals for it. Only test so far requires killing the animal which most of our animals are as friendly as someones pet dog. We are worried though as because of this there are a lot more restrictions being put and discussed on us as well as the possible banning of deer farms. I can not control what is happening but have to wait and see how things work out since so far it is limited to a few states. Before this is all said and done we may be out of the deer business and only keep a few for pets as it has all but destroyed the industry. I will post the article if I can find it as it may be interesting to some. Take care and thanks for worring about me.

"CWD has been around since the 30's", no, I suspect it has always been around but we have only chronicaled it since about that time. That it MAY be becoming more widespread is likely the result of to many deer, stressed immune systems from the competition for food and territory and the need for a good thinning out. I think I will be passing on the venison but please shoot some of these white tailed woods rats before they take over the planet. J

I should have said the first case of CWD was discovered in the 30's. Later.

Sorry about the impact this has on your deer buisness. Cattlemen in the US (Oklalhoma included) suffer whenever the media whip up sensational leadins and stories about any problem with beef. We have none of the reported disease problems here (especially mad cow) but the public goes bonkers and refuses to buy our product (better safe than sorry they say) even though it makes no real sense. We drive around with BEEF front plates on our cars and trucks and our wives are skittish about eating store bought or resturant served beef. Isn't hysteria interesting. Anyone recall the toilet paper shortage that Johny Carson caused by saying there was a toilet papoer shortage?

Anyway, sorry such a benign enterprise as supplying pet/ornamental deer is disrupted. What next?

Robert,

I was wondering if New York has started a monitoring program for CWD in pen reared deer yet. We started here in Illinois this summer. It appears that some states will allow for exporting and importing deer after the herd has been monitored for five years. Yes, I know five years is a long time, but the alternative would be disastrous.

Also if anyone would like information on CWD, let me know, will be glad to email the real facts on CWD, not some hyped up media stories.

New York will let us sell deer still, we just can not import any in to NY. If I remember right I think they shut down the importing for 5 years hoping that there will either be a test or that CWD will go away. So far there have been no cases ever found or reported here and hopefully it will stay that way.
