Tractor
Hinomoto E16
Hi all
I'm trying to get a primer on a Hinomoto E16 manual, parts list, schematic, anything really. Tractor came with property not running no key. I know nothing about tractors but can learn with help at least I'm willing to try. Not a machanic Electronic tech. by trade. Help!

Good for you. It would be helpful if you could post pics, fuller description of condition/symptoms, when last run, etc. If it's been a while, drain the fuel tank, change the fuel filter and prime the injector pump. Clean the battery terminals and charge/replace the battery. Check oil and coolant levels.

Sheaffer Tractor posts on TBN and would be worth contacting.

Are you talking about something like this?

Hi Legman; welcome to TBN - first, you'll likely get more action if you change your profile to include general location, maybe down to state. Otherwise some recommendations you get might only work in the swamps of Louisiana, for example.

The good news; I was an electronics tech in several of my "past lives", now have 2 older tractors and a full-size Case backhoe, bunches of other related stuff. IOW, it's doable

The BAD news; very few of the tools you may have acquired previously will help much on tractors, even a small one

I'd not heard of Hinomoto before, but Tractordata.com has (sorta)
TractorData.com Hinomoto E16 tractor information

Looks like that tractor was only made for a couple years from 1977-1979; on this page,
TractorData.com - Hinomoto farm tractors sorted by model

it mentions that Tierra is the new name - one of those instances is actually a link to their website, but I kept getting a timeout when trying to access it. If you ever can, they MIGHT have info on your tractor (or even downloads, if you're REAL lucky) - but I'm thinking it may be history.

Looks like your tractor was available with either 2 or 4 wheel drive, both with diesel engines - if your "not a mechanic" status is TOTAL, the ONLY thing (short of breakage) that'll stop a diesel engine is shutting off its FUEL. Also, a quick look at your front tires should tell you whether yours is 2 or 4wheel drive; agressive tread will almost guarantee yours is 4WD, smooth tread should be 2WD.

BTW, google (in between taking over the world :=) can be your friend
hinomoto e16 manual - Google Search

A word of warning tho - if, in your search for a manual, you see one on disk, make ABSOLUTELY SURE they include the word "SEARCHABLE" - there are quite a few of those offered cheaper (usually), and all you get is a disk with PICTURES of each page of a manual, in PDF format. "searchable" indicates they've actually taken the time to OCR those pics and convert to text - without that, you can search on ANY word and get a "not found", not a lot of help when you wanna know about "hitch", "transmission", etc...

'Nuther word of warning; this new "addiction" can be a pretty deep rabbit hole. I actually HAVE been a mechanic, and I STILL ended up with an entire 40" wide top and bottom rollaway tool box dedicated to large/tractor/hydraulic type tools, not to mention a few thou$and in machine tools - YMMV, but you've been warned  ... Steve

Looks like Airbiscuit snuck in while I was typing - his pic shows a 2WD version; no such thing as too MUCH info...

These are very simple and reliable Japanese tractors.
I have often seen them being used on the small mom and pop farms in Japan.
I never saw 2WD.

I missed the part about the missing key.

You could roll the dice and try this ($3.99 and fits a gazillion Japanese trctors including Hinomoto)

Welcome to the world of tractors. I am also a city guy who semi retired to a small hobby ranch that my brother bought about three years ago. He is blind and I sort of do the stuff he can't, putting in fences, clearing blackberries and junk, setting out the big bales for his horses, work, build, remodel, etc. He gives the horses their daily grain ration, brushes them down etc. He has owned them for over twenty years and couldn't let go of them when he moved from Minnesota. I bought a used Ford 1715 and have since found that implements are addictive. The tractor came with a box blade and a flail mower. I have since added a back blade, rock rake, brush hog, rototiller and a post hole digger. Just about all of them get used several times a year. Although as I get the place more in order, the less I am going to use some of them.

You will find this site full of lots of helpful and knowledgeable people, some more so than others. Do some searches on YouTube also. It seems somebody will have posted a video about similar machines and/or similar problems. First things first is to be sure fuel is making its way to the cylinders and go from there.

Good luck and Godspeed.

There's nothing magic about tractors. Diesel engines require a strong battery for cranking, the correct amount of fuel at the right part of the cycle and enough compression for heat the fuel and ignite it. You don't have a key so either finding a key or getting a new key/switch combination is the first order of business. Then make sure that your battery is fully charges. make sure there is adequate fuel in the tank. If the tractor has set for a while, fresh fuel might be in order. Look for a valve at the tank bottom and make sure it is wide open. I would start out at the fuel filter outlet to see if you have a gushing supply of fuel. If not work back to the tank replacing the fuel filter along the way. After replacing the filter you'll have to bleed the air out of the system but if you don't get fuel to the filter, continue upstream looking for pinched or damaged fuel lines. When you get to the tank, if you still do't have fuel the strainer in the tank out let is plugged with crud. Blow back with compressed air or probe with a wire. Once you are sure that you have air free fuel to the filter out let, you are ready to start. Crack open the fitting at the injectors and crank until you have have air free fuel at the injectors. Then tighten the injectors and try to start.

Good Luck!

Looks at lot like my old Iseki tractor. I could start it with a screwdriver. I have to turn the key to the left to heat the glow plugs before it would start. A good little tractor but hard to find parts. If i get air in the fuel line, it is hard to get it out to start. I always had to bleed each line going to the injectors, one at a time. But a good little tractor. A lot of power for the size and a lot of gears.
