Hello everyone,

I have a 2016 CK3510. I was operating the loader on this tractor when it stalled out on me. I went to restart it and it would not turn over. This also happened to me last summer a few times. I replaced the battery because it was completely dead and I was in a hurry to get my posts in the ground and did not have time to charge it. The new battery was installed and the tractor started right up. It died on me again a week later and the battery was dead again. I checked everything I could to see if something was turned on and everything was off. Each time that the tractor has stalled I had to either jump start it or replace the battery which I now realize was probably not necessary. Also each time it stalled I was using the loader or post hole auger but not in such a way that it would be maxing it out.

I have resorted to putting a battery tender on it so I know it will start. I don't think using the battery tender is a bad thing but I am concerned that it may die on me when I am using it and leave me stranded. Any thoughts on why when I try to restart it I have a dead battery? What would cause the battery to drain completely while it is running under normal conditions?

Thanks in advance for any advice on this.

Have you checked the voltage while the tractor is running? I am guessing an alternator or voltage regulator issue.

I have not checked the voltage while running. Is there a specific place to check voltage or can I check it at the battery terminals?

You can check the battery right on the battery terminal for starters. When the tractor is not running it should be about 12.5 or so volts. If you then start the tractor, when it's running it should rise to 13.5 to 14 volts. It may be a bit lower than 12.5 immediately after you start it but you should be able to watch it increase in voltage. While you're at it though it wouldn't hurt to clean the battery terminals both on the battery and on the cables. Be sure your generator belt is tight. Make sure you've got a good ground from the battery to the frame. In other words, go through the basics.

Also check that when you turn the key, the charge light is working.

I have a skidsteer that, even when brand new, the battery would drain down.

Put a new alternator in and no more problems

Sully, you recieved great advice regarding your "battery" problem. It's really a charging system problem, so confirm this while the tractor is running by checking voltage across the battery terminals. Readings less than 13.5 tell you the alternator is not charging the battery. Replace the alternator and while your at it, also replace your fan belt. Might as well do both at same time. Adjust fan belt as required.

Actually, I am surprised your battery lasted so long without a properly working charging system.

Did you have to pull out the air cleaner to remove the battery? I feel stupid but Lordy I can't see how to get that battery out.

You’re hijacking this thread and should start your own. But, Why do you want to remove the battery?
