Hey y’all

My CK 3510 was running fine when I looked down and saw tach at 4,000 which it was only at about 2,000 so I shut it down to see if needle reset back to zero.
It did not, so I disconnected the battery for a few minutes and that reset the needle.
Now it will not crank or even click when I turn the key (like when a battery is dying)
All instruments light up and heater coil cycles when I turn key, but after that, nothing.
I checked fuses and even replaced the starter relay in the fuse panel.
Any ideas or any place to start?

Hello Dave!

Can you give us a bit of history of your machine? New/Used? Gear/HST?

If it won't start and no power is getting to the starter relay, it's likely a safety switch somewhere. Could also be a bad ground, or a circuit going to ground when it shouldn't. The instrument panel acting funny lends credence to the idea of bad/incorrect ground somewhere, but it could simply mean a bad instrument panel. Recommend you start from the starter and work your way back to the battery. The power is going or stopping somewhere. Let the hunt begin! :)

I had similar issue.
Discovered the ground clamp is the soft lead type, had no more righty tighty left.
Replaced with a marine grade clamp from O'Reilly snugged it up and all is well.
Hope yours is that simple.

I had something similar - hit something with bushog and shut it down quickly. Wouldn’t crank. Was the electric pto I had left engaged.

Ok, 2017 model, bought it one year old with under 100 hours.

It is gear (not a fan of hydro b/c I like to control power) and this is the first thing that ever went wrong in over two years of almost daily use.

After initially posting I went out and let my hillbilly nature take over, screwdriver in hand I arc’d the starter and it fired right up.

To answer another post, tach and instrument panel was acting normal (for the 15 min I ran it).

I will take everyone’s suggestions and work from the key to the starting solenoid.

Since I already replaced the starter relay, i think a ground or short may be the most likely.

Thank you all, and keep safe!

Sure sounds like aground fault - on tour in Bz and there was an issue with one of the fleet vehicles (lost two to fire) - me and another Sgt each took a vehicle that was grounded for an electrical fault, decided that the entire wiring harness was being exposed and/or dropped from the vehicle - took us both 5 days total to find but, it too was a ground fault - ground faults are so notorious - anyway, there was a ground connection that had over 6 wires coming to the terminal - corrosion was the culprit here, all but maybe 6 strands broken off - after this, we did an entire fleet check to ensure all potential faults got fixed - every one of them had the same fault to varying degrees.

I only share that to say one thing - an electrical fault is not always easy to find - however, most come back to the very basics - needs a ground fixed
