I agree. I'm a true believer of evaluating what I need versus what I want. That way I can determine what my ego costs.

In my case, I bought a tractor bigger than I initially sought. I was originally looking at a new 25hp, but then after evaluating the specs compared to the projects I had lined up, I realized the the 25hp was not going to do the trick. Then a used 41hp popped up for sale with low hours and low price, and came in much cheaper than the new 25hp would have been.

For me a 60hp would be overkill. Even if I could electronically increase the hp I probably wouldn't unless it had a real benefit to me, which at this point in time I can't even anticipate.

Tractor pricing should be broken down into "the needful" and "the big boy toy" elements. Of course it must never be seen by wives but we should at least be able to use such data to stare our egos down at moments of weakness.

I went from a 27HP Cub cadet to my NX4510 45HP tractor. This was an incredible upgrade in size and HP. I bought it brand new as a leftover for $21,500 with the loader and a 6 year warranty. It was well after the fact that I started to do some real research and noticed that the 45, 50, 55 and 60HP motors were all the same size engines. That is when I started to ask questions to see if anyone had found a way to push out 60HP out of their smaller HP tractors. All four tractors are identical except for the HP of the motors. When I get some more time I will start revieing parts for the 45 and 60 to see exactly what parts are different as in the camshaft, injection rail, etc.

I went from a 20 hp Farmall C to the 27 hp Kioti. The main thing I was looking at was the overall size of the tractor for the areas I need to clean in winter. I can get into some pretty tight spots with the Kioti that I couldn't with the Farmall.
I was also sick and tired of getting stuck with the Farmall and wanted a 4 wd tractor and cab. In four and a half years with the Kioti I've only needed a tow truck once and that was at the start of last winter.
