Hi all, my CK20 has about 25 hours and is about 6 months old. Should I wait until 50 hours (another 6 months) to change the engine oil or would it be beneficial to change it now. The oil is pretty dark but it's up to the full mark. This is my first diesel engine and I am thinking the the color may be ok but would like some input.

THanks

The color is fine. Diesel oil gets black quickly.

As far as when to change it, flip a coin. I say this because a lot of folks will tell
you to change it now and the others will say change it at 50 hours.

If you go another six months and haven't hit 50 hours, change it then anyway.

Don't forget, it takes DIESEL oil. Like Rotella-T

My best advice, whatever you decide make sure you have big enough container to catch the oil. I learned the hard way

I think you need MORE seat-time to clock the next 25 hours in a reasonable time frame. :D :D

Don

Yep, you're right.

I am of the opinion that 6 months is a long time for oil, I feel as though there is a shelf life. I would change and then change again at 50 or within 3-6 months whichever comes first. My overriding thought is, oil and filter are a whole lot cheaper than a new motor many time over.

==================

I just got done with the 50 hours inspection on my CK20 and I chose to follow the book. It said 50 hours so 50 hours it was. To me, do it by the book as opposed to overkill on oil changing. Also, the book fails to mention using synthetic oils so I stuck by it and used straight Shell Rotellla 10W30. For the sake of any existing warranty I believe you can't goo wrong.

Somebody also mentioned to be sure to use a big tub because when you pull that plug your going to have five gallons of tractor tranny oil shoot out in no time. BTW about that hydraulic oil resovoir drain plug, take some time to clean all the shavings that have been held magnetically by that magnet on there. it amazing how much iron comes from these transmissions and hydraulic systems as these things break in.

Last but not least, make sure you oil the filter gaskets. I did and it still managed to leak. I don't how much tighter I dare try but naturally it seems to be coming from that darn expensive bottom filter.

Good luck

No matter whether you use synthetic or regular engine oil, make sure it is diesel rated. It is necessary to properly handle the soot and other byproducts of the diesel engine.
