Tractor
Kioti CK20HST
Just finished some loader work on a job was back blading to cleanup and trans stopped dead and makes a grinding sound. Tried forward reverse in hi and low ranges, no good. Noise stops when clutch pushed in.

Anyone else have this symptom and what did it end up being. How much did it cost and did you diy or take to dealer? Am reasonably competent mechanic with a fully equipped garage ad have done engines and trannys before.

I know the tractor will have to be split to get to the hydro etc.

thanks for your help.

Update;
talked to head mech at dealer. Hasn't encountered this on a Kioti (lucky me) , thinks from past experience on Masseys and New Hollands that it is the clutch or shaft or splined sleeve connecting clutch to Hydro. Will know more later when get it to shop Saturday AM. Then he can listen to noise and then cut apart hydraulic and hydrostat filters and if no metal then it's the clutch etc. If there's metal then it's ouch!!!

You should definitely DIY, then.

The HST unit is much much simpler than an automotive AT, and the gearbox has no synchros. My
bet is the failure is due to something in the clutch or range shift gearbox, not the HST.

I have been deep inside 3 tractor HSTs, one Kubota and 2 JD.

The hardest part is splitting the tractor.

It happened to mine last year and it is not exactly unheard of. My symptoms were exactly as you described.

Neither of the dealers near me were equipped to do a rebuild, only a replacement was proposed so we traded ours in and bought a bigger unit.

Not what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the input.

Here's the update; dealer split tractor, the splined coupling connecting the clutch shaft to hydro input shaft, stripped the splines on both shafts. it appears to me and the dealer Service Mgr. that the roll pin that is supposed to secure the coupling broke allowing the coupling to shift ,work back and forth, wear down the splines on both shafts and eventually strip the splines.

Now the "good news" it can be fixed for about $3500 parts and labor. BAD NEWS the shafts don't exist any where in the parts system. Kioti says they have to be custom made in S. Korea and that could take 8 to 10 weeks. To my way of thinking this is unacceptable, seems like they should be able to send the drawings via email to a machine shop in the USA and get it done a lot faster. Also trying to find some used parts.

I'm not very happy and the Service Mgr is really unhappy because he's got my tractor torn apart , taking up space in his shop all summer and no help from Kioti.

Did they quote you a price to replace the transmission?

Perhaps they have a good reason to eat some labor to get your machine out of their shop sooner.

Joe, Just did a quick check, Bobcat Parts warehouse in Chicago has both shafts & the coupler in stock. Same as CT120/122. Contact a Bobcat dealer and order from them.

Sorry to hear about the problem....but maybe the Bobcat part lead will pan out.

I'm confused....I know these have a clutch, but how does it work considering it's supposed to be HST?

Many HST tractors have a foot clutch; the trend is away from that approach to one where
the PTO is operated electrically. I would say probably most HST CUTs now use electric PTOs, tho I
do not have stats.

In an HST tractor with foot clutch, the engine is connected to the input of the HST just like
a manually-shifted gear tractor. The input shaft to the HST drives both the HST pump and
the PTO, the latter via a drive shaft that goes thru the HST to the final drive gearbox.

The advantages of a foot clutch in an HST tractor is that you have better control of the PTO,
where you can slip the clutch a bit so the PTO engages slowly. The foot clutch also allows
for a very simple safety start interlock system: one switch. Conversely, HST CUTs with
an electric PTO have an abrupt engagement, as they are ON or OFF. Electric
brakes are used with electric PTOs, which can be a weak point in the system.
