My 2007 CK30HST glow plug light does not come on when I turn the key and the engine is cold. I find I can eventually start the engine by running the starter a couple times for 30 seconds or so - white smoke comes out the exhaust until it catches. It runs fine, warms up and in half an hour I turn off the engine. I then wait a few minutes before turning on the key on again and observe the glow plug light DOES come one and I can easily start the engine. Over the past few weeks I've repeated this scenario. Cold engine - no glow plug light; hot engine - glow plug light. I'm located in northern NJ. My old dealer, Wallace, closed down several years ago. I took it to another dealer here in NJ twice and they didn't fix it - actually I think they made things worse - like brake lights always on, temperature gauge not working - apparently electronic problems. They told me they initially had the wrong electrical diagram, that apparently this model/year had two versions of electric diagrams, that they then got the right diagram, and tried to fix things. But after looking inside the engine compartment I see what looks like electronic relays hanging when they should be held by a screw/nut; and other 'sloppy' things. So forget them. I though I'd invest the time and try to fix it myself but I need help on what to do. I'd like to start with the glow plug problem Can someone point me to a concrete set of steps to perform or videos or ... . I do have a multimeter and a flash light but no diagrams.

More info - the battery is new as are the battery cables; the starting switch is also new; I verified the fuses in the box near the brake pedal have continuity.

So I was reading the Kioti Tractor WOKSHOP MANUAL CK25/30 that I got when I bought the tractor. I started looking through the electrical section. I realized I didn't know where the parts mentioned (i.e. relays) were located so I decided to take a few pics inside the hood with the objective of 'getting the lay of the land'.

They are here Update your browser to use Google Drive - Google Drive Help

Each pic has parts circled and labelled with a letter.

I'd appreciate identifying what each is and does; to help focus my efforts.

For example, I'd like to know what each labelled part is/does.

I read about the "slow blow fuse" but not what it is/does.

I would like to know where the temperature sensor it located.

I did see a wire with a connector just hanging - so there is a pic of that.

Aside from the glow plug light not coming on when the engine is cold, other to-dos include: brake lights always on and temperature gauge not working. I noticed these things (and more) upon return from the dealer that I've lost confidence in.

Appreciate your help.

I did read about the manual glow plug position on the starting switch.
I gave it a try to day when the engine was cold.
For the record, the glow plug light did not come on.
But holding the key in the manual glow plug position for 15 seconds, then to the start position resulted in the engine starting right up.
I let it run 15 minutes and turned it off.
Waited a few minutes, the turned the key to the preheat position - the glow light came on - waited 10 seconds and it went off - and it started right up again.
Strange behaviour.

It might have something to do w/ the temp gauge not working..??
CHECK your fluid level..
IF the sensor cant read the temp.. the GP's aren't gonna come on..
THEN when u run it, the sensor gets wet & says>> hey, its cold in here..

For starters, the slow-blow fuse is taped in the wire bundle near the starter. If that fuse is blown, the tractor will be totally dead, electrically.
The temp sensor is in the lower thermostat housing on top of the engine.
More later.

Kioti changed the engine design during the 2007 build year, starting with s/n G704-00079 but I think you have the older version (s/n G704-00078 and previous) because item "C" in your first photo is the preheat controller used in the older version. This is a good thing because the older version is not vulnerable to broken gears in the injection pump and the preheat circuit is very simple:

The glow light works so the fuse must be OK. So either the sensor, preheat controller, or connecting wires are your problem. The book says this about the sensor:

B. ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SWITCH
The coolant temperature switch is located at the front
top side of the engine inside the thermostat housing.
This switch is open under normal operating temperatures
and closed when operating temperatures reach
higher than normal limits, 53°C, illuminating the indicator
bulb on the instrument panel.l.

This is likely one of the many errors in the manual but it is probably supposed to be closed when cold and open when hot,. In other words it should have read "and closed when operating temperatures are below normal limits, 53C, ...

There are also confusing instructions for testing the preheat controller:

Controlller_Test.jpg

Given your symptoms, I suspect the sensor (maybe disconnected?) but the controller could be bad. Here is a link to the parts diagram. I suspect this sensor (#15 in diagram) has a dual function and also operates the temp gauge.

Not a fix but a good work around
You should have a manual glow plug position between the on position and start if you hold the key in that position it will manually light the glow plugs.
I would first check to see if the sensor is plugged in. If it is then I would unplug it and try jumping the connector to see if you can get it to change states if it seems to change with and without the jumper then the controller is ok and replace the sensor.
