So I have been having an intermittent issue with glow plugs and starting this winter. It is now becoming the normal unfortunately.

What is happening is when I turn the key the glow plug relay is not always energized. No glow plug light on dash either. Manual glow plug position makes a light relay click but is not enough to snap it over into functioning. This results it next to impossible starting in winter.

Eventually it will snap the glow plugs on auto after many attempts and reconnecting wiring from relay, dash computer and battery terminals making sure it has a good connection.

Now this minor issue is being compounded by the fact the engine now will not start up even warm without plugs. Even at full operating temperature if I shut it off it will not start again without glow plug cycle.

I think the glow plug issue I can solve with a thorough cleaning and dielectric greasing of the wiring and relays. Perhaps a new relay. However the no start when warm has me more worried.

Would this be a timing issue? Or maybe valves out of adjustment making poor compression?

Any advice on either the glow plug or starting warm would be appreciated.

This is a 2009 ck35 hst with just over 400hrs on the meter.

I think you need to check the stop solenoid, that's probably what you hear (or don't hear) and the engine cannot start (or run) unless that solenoid retracts. Actual solenoid failures are rare but failures of the controlling relay are common. That relay is similar to the glow and start relays but with contacts are rated at 70 amps (as I recall) vs 30. Also, wonky key switches are common, especially if the tractor is constantly exposed to weather. A wonky key switch could effect glow and the stop solenoid. You can replace the switch or disassemble and clean it.

Ohhh that's what the 70A is doing I thought it was glow plugs. Yes you are likely correct then. As if that isn't retracting that would cause all my starting issues. I will have a look!

My key switch started acting up on a 2004 CK30hst and caused various things, like yours, to occur. Did the WD-40 lube. Worked for a while. Finally replaced with all being good. Took the old one apart and cleaned. Now have a back up if needed. Those stop relays can go bad also and some members had to replace. You need power on to your stop solenoid to allow the injection pump to work and have the engine run. I think you're on the right track.

My error. The 70A is glow plugs. The SS relay is about 30A (as is the starter relay). Don't know what I was thinking.

Also, the SS relay only provides a brief (1 sec.) pulse to the high-current "pull" coil but the key switch must provide continuous power to the low-current "hold" coil or the stop solenoid will extend (and stop the engine).
