From what I've gathered CJ-4 oils should be backwards compatible with CL-4 with the exception that the new additives are not designed to cope with as much soot from older engines or with higher sulfur off-highway fuels. Not that they are inferior but different.

I'd like to run rotella 10-30 CJ-4 in my m7040 but the kubota manual specifically says "CJ-4 is for DPF equipped engines and not approved for use."

CJ-4 manufacturers state that it can be used to replace CL-4 and that CJ-4 meets stricter guidelines so IS a superior oil. Less its, high soot and high sulfur fuel handling abilities.

Can anyone clarify why Kubota does not approve of CJ-4 oil in a 2013 M7040? Is it an emissions testing aspect or something I'm not understanding about the lubrication requirements of this engine?

FWIW, I dont use farm fuel and these new motors are supposed to be speced real tight. I wouldnt think they need a "high soot" capable oil?

its fine to use CJ rated oil in an older engine. Contact your local dealership and ask the parts guy about it. There is a bulletin issued by Kubota saying that the CJ oil IS backwards compatible, although the owners manual says otherwise.

Agree here-Rotella 10W30 is an excellent choice for your tractor, very popular around these parts for tractors. And Kubota's factory fill is 10W30.
CJ-4 oils were created for diesel engines with DPF's,earlier engines only required CI-4,or even less.
Use Rotella and feel good!

After checking oil spec's to find an equal quality oil to Kubota's engine oil you should be looking at Rimula oils from Shell to have a closer match. Many people do use the rotella as it is very common to find and the price is lower so do change the oil more frequently then recommended in the manual. Another comparable although also higher priced is the Case-IH engine oil. The Hytran plus although for years one of my favorites is not as good as the Super UDT in the hydro's as the UDT helped the CNH marketed tractors.
