We have a nice metal table and usually just clamp the ground to the table somewhere out of the way of what we are welding.
For some of the heavy pieces, they work fine without clamping them to the table. For smaller things, we sometimes need to clamp them.
If we have a problem getting an arc, we move the ground to the work.
BTW - our table is outside and is rusty - still works fine.
When doing work on our trailers, we just clamp the ground somewhere close to the welder - shorter cable on the ground then the stinger - never had a problem with getting an arc.
