Where do I sign up? I've been welding over 30 years, mig, stick, gas, portable, in shop etc. I have 3 welders now. But I've never had an overhead weld look that good.

But you'll have to commute about 1300 miles each way ;)

Mark, you're exactly right. You'd think the molten metal would just drip out, but it doesn't (obviously). Having someone show you and help you along makes a ton of difference. Dunno if we'll ever touch stainless in this class. I think it is all mild steel for the duration. Fine by me, for now.

I'd see if I could score a few SS 309l's to work with, just for the experience. It would be helpful, because there may be something, you could find that would benefit from SS someday. You do not need SS to weld together. It will weld mild steel fine. Keep your heat about 20% lower. The slag from what I understand is lime based. So molten lime = brimstone. Nasty stuff.

Yeah - good point. I'm sure there is some 309 rod around. You generally would think - SS for SS rod, but your right, of course - it can be used on mild steel, which there is plenty of. They buy pallets of 50 lb boxes of rod there, so I'm sure there is some 309 around... The teacher is pretty open to requests like that, so I'd bet he'd agree if they have it.
