Any ideas on removing the excess grease from around the joints after it builds up. What I usually do is remove the bulk with a plastic putty knife and then use a rag to finish it off, but it is very time consuming. I'm looking for some ideas.

I used to clean it too. But now I just ignore it most of the time. Once a while I wipe it with shop paper towels.

I'll give you the same advice I received, wipe it of with a rag, clean it with a rag with some mineral spirits. I don't like to let it build up as dirt sticks to it and could work it's way back into the joint besides grease gets all over everything.

I use a pressure washer occasionally (about once every year or two )to get off the build up grease and hose off the dirt from the tractor at the same time. Of course afterward I have to wipe up the grease from the tractor where the pressure washer blew it all over. After I have cleaned up everything, I grease it well to drive out any water.

Of course nothing would beat a high pressure steam cleaner for degreasing but not many folks can afford one of those.

Usually I just wipe it of with a paper towel to remove the globs from over greasing and let the rest stay in place. WD 40 is about as good a solvent to remove grease from painted surfaces as you can get and doesn't require washing to remove the residue. A little dust will stick to it but that then wipes off easily also.

Thanks for the replies. I will try the WD40, someone also told me to try Simple Green.

how does all this heavy machinery that is slobbering grease out of every joint, working in the dust/sand/grit/dirt 12+ hours a day make it 20k hrs without worrying about wiping off greased joints?

I don't bother cleaning up the excess grease. Tractor gets greased and washed almost every time I use it in Summer. i clean the grease off the nipples and then pump away.

Except for the washed part, That is pretty much how I do it also, but must occasionally clean some of the globs off with my shirt when leaning against the tractor looking at something. Then I get pissed and blast it all off. During summer I wear just white T shirts and the FEL grease on them keeps me in shop rags most of the time.

Oh how I have ticked my wife off so many times. Hop on the tractor after work to do something and not take the time to change into old clothes. Not that it ruined the shirt but as much as the greasy nice shirt got washed with all the other nice shirts.
