My question is a simple one, but I can't find any information online or in my manual. The manual says I need to clean this strainer after 50 hours, and now is the time. It does not say I need to change fluid until I get to 1000 hours. I'm really not excited about changing fluid as that stuff is darned expensive!

My question is this...
Do I need to drain the fluid before removing the transmission oil strainer? Is all of the fluid going to run out when I open that thing, or is there some sort of siphon break or valve that will save me the hassle of removing, keeping clean, and then re-filling 10 gallons of hydraulic fluid?

You must drain it or you will have a flood.

Might as well change it now. It will be 1000 hours till you have to mess with it again. Try to find a good brand on sale if it is possible. I used the Tractor Supply Premium Fluid, it ran about $38 per five gallon bucket (you will need two of them), it takes something like 9 gallons. I can't remember the exact amount with looking at the manual.

That's what I was afraid of. Ugh. I really don't intend to change the fluid, but I'll take really good care of it while it's out of the tractor.

Changing the transmission fluid at 50 hours is a good practice. The first 50 hours is the break in time for a new tractor and the tranny fluid might have a lot of unwanted "crud" in it. I know my Kubota manual recommends changing the fluid at 50 hours and then every 600 hours after that.

Ya I know its a pain in the you know what. I have nice clean buckets and a drain pan with spout that I use only for that purpose. I also have a nice funnel that goes in the bucket that paint strainer fits in.

Hmmm lets see. Tractor $35,000. 10 gallons of oil $76 + tax. I think the oil is a small price to pay to protect your investment. Reminds me of the guy who bought a 45 foot Scarab powerboat and then complained that fuel was $3 per gallon at the marina.

I dumped everything, cleaned everything, put new filters in everything except the air filters, at 50 hours... You will be surprised the stuff you find in the bottom of your common sump... and all the grey iron sludge on the sump screen from the gears lap'n themselves in... Don't know about your 4025, but my 5035 HST had lots of those 1/2 NPT square headed male pipe plug drains in various spots in the cases. I pulled every one and cleaned the magnets on them, too. [ painted the square drive head red so it will be easier to find them next time.. ] Cheap insurance, plus it's good to get under there and look see at how well your tractor is made.... :)

Best I can tell is you will still have to top it off. So you will have to buy some quantity of fluid. Most probably a 5 gallon bucket. Don't know how much use the machine will get but I can assure you that 5 gallons (times 2) will cost more when you hit 1000 hours. The filters are the most expensive part anyways. I am going to vote one more time for "just change the fluid and be done with it".

I think you missed something in that on-line service information.

For my 2008 Mahindra 5525, at 50 hours you have to drain the tranny/hydraulic fluid, clean that screen, clean the drain plugs, and replace with new fluid.

Even if you have it done at your dealer's shop, the cost is worth it to protect your much more expensive investment in your tractor.

Good luck
