This is a cylinder that is off my tilt trailer (see photos). The line that connects the top to the bottom is rusted and leaked out the fluid. I would like to try to repair it my self but I need some help in that I have not been able to find a local hydraulic repair shop.

Questions?

1) Would I be able to get the tubing connecting the top to the bottom a NAPA if looks like break line to me so I could easily replace it.

2) The plug at the one end to me looks like the place I would refill with hydraulic fluid once the above repair is done. Am I correct? If so how do you know how much fluid to add? When you fill what position should the cylinder be in.

Sorry for the questions I new to doing hydraulic cylinder repair. Thank John

I assume this cylinder is used to dampen a tilt action or something like that. Does not look like its powered by a pump. It also looks generic and could be replaced for about $100 at TSC. Looks like from the pictures its a 2" x 18" stroke cylinder. You can fix with a hydraulic hose from any store. Does not have to be hard line like they have. You and just use a regular hydraulic hose to tie the sides together from TSC also. Just fill the cylinder with the piston retracted and secure the line.

Diamondpilot has the right idea about replacing with new.....if it even comes apart It'll be a bear to repack (because of the rust).....

Best to add a needle valve with hoses that way you can tweek the speed you want trailer to come down.....or stay up after you drive up.....

I've seen these plumbed with the needle valve in a convenient spot off to the side......makes a nice add-on.....

I would imagine that standard brake tubing would work fine actually. I doubt that line sees more than a few hundred PSI. It sounds like the cylinder is OK - right? why replace it then?

Above posts are right on too. Hydraulic line is probably the best to use. Hose would work too, as long as the ID isn't too big. A valve is a great idea.
