over last few days we've been hit with 50+ sustained winds; last night the gusts were over 75mph at my place. when I got home from work it was dark already, but I tried to find my 95gal dumpster picked up a few shingles strewn in the driveway. not sure the extent of damage to the place, will need to wait until tomorrow to look in daylight, but the wind did knock down billboards and tore roofs off of houses/sheds near me. crossing my fingers...
just more of the weird weather stuff that's been occurring during the last two months : (

We had a front go through last weekend that had a wind gusts in the 80's. A three story building under construction was blown over by the winds. The building had sheathing on half of the building and it looks like the roof was sheathed as well. There is a video of the building collapse but you cannot see the side of the building that was being hit by the wind. I am guessing that side of he building was at the same state of construction.

When I heard the building had collapsed and saw the photo of the standing building, I figured the side of the building with OUT sheathing collapsed first.

I was wrong. The part of the building WITH sheathing collapsed first. I watched the video a good dozen times!:laughing::laughing: I could not believe that side fell first. I would have thought the unsheathed part of the building would have failed. I think the wind could blow through the studs but since the roof deck was installed, the roof would have acted like a sail but the walls would not have rigidity and collapsed. Or that was my theory.:laughing::laughing:

There were no windows or doors installed on the building. So my next theory is that the wind got into the sheathed part of the building via the door/window openings which caused the building to fail. I still think that is odd because the building just falls over. I hope there is a forensic study done about the failure and that it is made public. The building failure was very scary. There were other buildings in the same complex that were further along in construction and they were just fine.

I really do not like strong winds. :D When we built the house, I specified hurricane clips to hold the roof to the walls. The framer did not want to install them but I insisted. :D Very glad I did we had those clips when that wind hit our house last weekend.

Dan

Wind is the main weather element I cant stand. I remember back in college Psychology class, said suicide rates in Wyoming where highest (per capita) in the nation and attributed to depression generated from the constant winds.

We have had weird weather in VA here too. After temperatures in the single digits early last week, it got up close to 70F last Saturday and then that intense storm front came through fast, with winds up near 80mph and tornados. We got lucky here, especially considering we have a lot of trees around our home and are near waterfront. But just down the road, a farm building lost its roof:

Best I can guess, maybe they had the doors open because of the mild temps, and wind got in and blew the roof off from inside. The building has been here for years, and survived plenty of other storms and hurricanes. This storm came through so fast, and without much warning, I bet nobody had time to get ready on the farm.

Western Kansas I-70 was closed to traffic yesterday. Dust made visibility very poor. Trucks and some rail cars blown over. I tried to work outside yesterday and finally said " the heck with it".

The wind does not need to get inside the building. Those sheathed walls act like a huge sail. Surely you have tried to carry a piece of plywood in even a minor breeze.

There is a huge high pressure dome over the Pacific NW and a huge batch of warmer than normal water off the coast. That is pushing the normal weather that comes through the PNW up into Canada and it then comes back down in the Midwest. Those high winds you guys got went through here about 4-5 days ago.

When I was a whippersnapper, I thought I wanted to go to Wyoming or Alaska. Until I went. Whew, no wonder they only have about 300,000 - 600,000 population respectively. Takes a tough old bird, or crazy, to take that weather! Hmmm, North Dakota, eh? Man, I get chilled just writing the words!
