Clover on Pasture

I live in Easern VA and why does the extension office recommend clover for horse pasture? It is not as bad this time but the new 1.5 acres we planted with the Southern States horse pasture mix has too much clover. 15 years ago I planted a custom mix recommened by the extension office and I even cut the clover in half. It akes over like a weed. Looks nice and green but the horses will founder or colic. 15 years ago I killed the filed and started over again with Timothy, rye and orchard grass. If I keep the clover cut down until the fall will the grass thicken up and squeeze out the clover.
