clunk on ignition switch turn on GC2300

When I first turn the key on I hear the fuel pump and I get a mechanical clunk. When I shut the engine off I get the same sound after the engine is off. Is there a mechanical switch tied to the electrical system. On start up some times it takes 3-4 turns of the switch before the starter engages. Engine starts with no problem and the battery is new and charged. Seems like there is some mechanical switch for the electrical system.

I would imagine the clunk you are hearing is the fuel shutoff solenoid. As far as not engaging the starter several times before starting, that is possibly a low voltage condition to the starter solenoid, or resistance in the solenoid itself. It could also be poor high amperage connections on the battery or starter.

Thanks for responding. New starter so I doubt it is the solenoid but your point of high resistance to the solenoid is a good point to check. Possibly key switch?

Could be the key switch, but more likely resistance in the numerous safety switches or resistance in the high amp cables (battery, ground, starter).
If it's low voltage on the solenoid wire, an easy fix is to add a simple relay that provides power to the solenoid directly from the battery, rather than through all of the safety switches.

Might check to see if there is a "starter relay" in circuit.... Electrical diagram in manual would tell you this.... I know in GC 1700 series the is a "starter relay" that triggers the solenoid on starter.... Other option may be internal (not visible ) corrosion in battery/ground cable or poor electrical connection at battery or where ground cable attachés to chassis.... Might try putting test lamp on the initializing terminal of solenoid to see if solenoid is actually getting signal to energise when key goes to start...

This type of tool could be your best friend when troubleshooting....

Might be in owners manual, I know it is for 17xx series....

Replaced my key switch a couple years ago. Showing a bit of corrosion and intermittent failure to crank.
