3-Point Hitch Clutch engage on PTO

We use the tractor quite often but not the PTO. It seems the clutch is more worn for changing gears than the PTO is. When trying to engage the clutch for the PTO it grinds and is very hard to engage. Is there a switch on the New Holland 1920 that can be bypassed so the PTO will engage on startup instead of trying to engage it after the tractor is started.

I had a similiar problem on my Ford 1710, As I understand it is like a 2 clutch system, on my tractor the PTO clutch was 1/2 engaged from lack of use, a dealership repaired it. Besides being dangerous, I have always been told, you should not backup with the PTO engaged, unless designed for reverse operation,like a snowblower.

Thanks for replying. I have backed up many times with the PTO engaged especially while spreading anti-skid in winter. Many times there is so much ice that the only way to climb a hill is to spread backwards to get up the hill. The 2 clutch system is the problem but the manual doesn't seem to show the access point to adjust it.

Whoever told you that was wrong!
