The newly acquired YM276D has a clutch that won't release. Hoye put a video online about replacing the clutch in a YM1510 and Aaron stated most models are similar. Does replacing the clutch take more than a weekend project? Any ideas are appreciated. Thank you in advance.

You may not need to replace the clutch, only get it unstuck. Whether you can replace it in a weekend depends upon you, your level of experience, your supply of tools, and your work location as well as the availability of parts or whether you want your existing clutch rebuilt. The simple answer to your question would be yes, it CAN be done in a weekend. Only you know whether you can do it in a weekend.

How does one unstick a clutch without replacing it?

I have access to a heated garage where the YM276D can be split in two halves. The shop is approximately thirty feet in depth and twenty four feet wide. There is an abundance of available tools, and if for some reason I don't own the right tool, one of four neighbors will have the tool. I have replaced many clutches in cars, including front wheel drive) through the years but never broke a tractor in half.

The parts....well Hoye will likely provide the parts, and with a clutch, kit seems the typical "clutch kit" would provide a starting point. That includes an 8" Pressure Plate assembly, Transmission Disc 7/8" 20 Spline Hub, and Release bearing.

If we had a clutch to stick, we would drive the tractor in low range and with the clutch pedal depressed, hit the brakes a few times. Most of the times it would unstick after a couple of hard brake applies..

Your brakes may or may not have enough strength to unstick your clutch. If they won't get it try putting your tractor up against an immovable object like a big tree. With the clutch pedal depressed either the clutch will unstick or the tractor will stall. You may wish to put it into your heated space for a couple hours before trying this. That way if water is frozen and holding the clutch disc it will have opportunity to melt and free things up.

I think your tractor has the power shift like my YM2310. If so you are in luck because you don't need to use the clutch to get moving. My YM2310 sat for two years outside in the rainy PNW for two years without being started before I bought it. The clutch was stuck. Rusted to the flywheel and rusted to the transmission input shaft. I drove it home from where I bought it. The drive was about 4 miles. I drove it in the highest gear for most of the drive home with the clutch pedal pressed down or with me working the pedal up and down. I also worked the throttle up and down some. The clutch started to slip when I was almost home. The disc was still stuck to the input shaft so the clutch would drag, but with the power shift it didn't matter that much. However, my son and I continued to use the tractor while almost constantly working the clutch pedal. It finally came loose from the input shaft while my son was driving the tractor. I think the clutch broke loose after using the tractor less than 6 hours. But we stepped on that clutch pedal a bunch of times. Now the clutch operates perfectly. It doesn't slip, isn't grabby, and is easy to feather. Doing what we did to get the clutch loose was way easier than splitting the tractor. Faster too. The clutch discs are prone to rusting to the flywheel, that's why Yanmar provided a lever that holds the clutch pedal down when the tractor is to be parked for a while. I'm sure your tractor has the same little device that hooks over the clutch pedal. With the power shift the clutch doesn't really get used very much so I am not worried about the disc being worn out. I'm sure the rust must have abraded a little material from the clutch disc but not enough to matter. I'm just gonna use the tractor and not worry about the clutch unless it starts to slip.

Eric,

I lived at the end of Troxell Road just past Deception Pass for years and can envision your drive. Thanks for the information. Someone mentioned using a brush hog to help. At the farm, there is a 60" brush hog that should really be a bit much for the tractor, but that sounds perfect to get it unstuck.

Right now the Powershift is working or at least the auction stated that; however, in my mind that means it's stuck in a particular gear on the manual part of the transmission. Can someone change the gear without the clutch working? Some truckers claim they can shift gears without using a clutch, but that sounds different than changing a gear in a tractor.

Oh man, you are gonna love that Power Shift. The Power Shift has wet clutches for each gear. They are automatic. There is no need to step on the clutch pedal. You just move the Power Shift lever. Your tractor has two transmissions, one, the main, sets the range and the other divides the range and reverses the tractor. The first transmission must be shifted with the clutch pedal if the engine is running. The tractor must be stopped. Do not try to shift the main transmission while the tractor is in motion. It is not necessary and can damage the transmission. The second transmission, the Power Shift, has a neutral, reverse, and 3 forward speeds and can be shifted while the tractor is in motion. So, with the Power Shift in neutral start the tractor. When it is warmed up just move the Power Shift lever to the desired speed. The tractor will start moving. It's that easy. No need to step on the clutch. And no need to step on the clutch for reverse either, just shift the Power Shift to reverse. You can put the main transmission in whatever gear you want even if the clutch is stuck. Put it into gear with the tractor stopped and the engine off. The tractor is designed to be started in motion with the main transmission in any gear. Once the clutch starts working you can use it in conjunction with the Power Shift. The best of both worlds.
