Sometimes my clutch does not disengage the transmission and I continue to chug forward until I knock it out of gear. But it's not always. Maybe 1/3 of the time. Is there some adjustments I can try, or do I have a clutching going bad?

Is this with or without the pto running?

I haven't been using the PTO, but it's possible I could have bumped the lever and engaged it without knowing it. I will check to be sure. Does this happen when the PTO is running?

I checked and my PTO was indeed engaged. I broke the roll pin in the shift lever trying to cram it into gear a couple of days ago, so I have to fix that before I can try to see if that was part of my clutch problem. It would be nice if that was the only problem!

When you get the roll pin fixed, try an over running clutch on the pto shaft.

It will stop the mower from pushing you forward.:D

I'm not sure what an over running clutch is. I actually didn't have anything on the PTO at all. It was just engaged. I got the roll pin fixed today, so I'll probably have to start her up to move snow by Wednesday, since a storm is on its way. I'll let you know how the clutch works without the PTO engaged.

Your problem isn't because the pto is on. My question was because I wonered if a pto implement could be the cause. If you are running a mower the mower will push the tractor when the clutch is depressed because of the momentum of the blades. An over running clutch will prevent this from occurring.
If your clutch is only working part of the time, I think have a linkage or pressure plate or throwout bearing problem. Is there around 3/4" freeplay in the pedal?

I went and checked and there doesn't seem to be any free play at all in the clutch. The linkage begins to pull the clutch lever right away.

I cant really tell if the 1/3 of the time that you are talking about is during the same day or 1/3 of the time you go out to use it. If 1/3 of the time you go out to use it - how long do you let the tractor set before using it? It could be the normal clutch sticking problem that has been discussed here many times. Try blocking the clutch down (also described here in several other posts) to see if that fixes the problem.. assuming you can get it to break free again.

If 1/3 of the time while you are using it then you probably have a problem with your pressure plate or bearing as Len said.

Your clutch should be adjusted to allow some free travel but that will not cause it to fail to disengage. No free travel would make the clutch slip - and also cause the throw out bearing to go out faster. Too much free travel can cause the clutch to fail to disengage but it does not sound like that is your problem.
