I have a Deutz 6206 with a 4 cylinder air cooled diesel engine. It
started up fine this summer, but won't start now that the
weather has gotten colder. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Johannes

There is a different blend of diesel that they use in the winter that has a anti-gelling chemical in it.
If you had summer diesel in the tractor and let it sit until the winter, then the gas most likely gelled up and clogged your injectors.

Is it cranking over, but just not starting?
When it cranks, are you getting smoke out the exhaust?
Does it have glow plugs?

Hmmm, Air cooled engine rules out an inline heater for the radiator hose. There are magnetic heaters that stick to the oil pan and fuel tank if they are made of metal (steel, not aluminum). The heated oil and fuel would definetely make it easier to start. The heaters are available from autoparts stores. Fuel and oil both thicken up when cooled down. Diesel can gel and restrict flow in that condition. There are also fuel additives that prevent gelling of fuel. My own tractor is stored in an unheated garage and I use an inline heater in the lower radiator hose, a diesel fuel additive and magnetic heaters on the oil pan and fuel tank. They eliminated the hard starting I experienced

You would need to check, but I believe that Deutz has a engine oil heater for cold weather use.

Cover it with a tarp and place a small electric heater under the tarp. This will warm it up.

If there is no factory oil heater for it, I have seen dipstick heaters for air cooled motors. Also, we have covered "hard start" diesel engines w/ a tarp as was suggested earlier, but I have found that a drop light w/ a 75 watt bulb was usually sufficient.
So, does the Duetz not have glow plugs either? I would think there would be some kind of cold weather start aid from the factory. Hmmmm.....
Other than this, how do you like the machine? I have seen a few Duetz around here but don't know how they run.

You have not filled out your profile yet so I do not know your part of the country BUT I don't believe there is anywhere yet that is down to 20 deg F yet so I do not think your problem is cold temps. Put a blanket over it, let the sun warm it for 2 hrs and if it still does not start the preoblem is not the cold or gelled fuel. Look for a fuel pump or solinoid problem or a clogged fuel filter.. goodluck Frank

Deutz does offer a preheat/glowplug system for their engines, however if your engine is not equipped with it ,it will be very costly to add. I have installed and used the KBI dieselmatic either injection system on several Deutz engines and found them to work very well. They are much less expensive and easy to install. Im sure they have a website. Norton
