If you keep your core temperature up, you're hands and feet will be alot more tolerant of the cold. That means insulated coveralls even when it's not that cold.

What makes my hands/fingers cold is the tools. I now use a small quarts heater directed to a small, thick board that serves as a tool rest. Its not hot enough to start the wood on fire but the tools sure feel nice now. It takes about 1/2 hr for my hands to catch up with the rest of me.

I'm heading out to the shop to clean up four pickerel we just caught. I use a halogen light to warm and illuminate my work area. It works great. It's -10C and my wet hands will stay warm.

My hands get cold too. I've taken to keeping a couple of hand warmers in my pockets, when my hands get cold I pop off my gloves and stick my hands in there. Cheap and lasts for hours.

That's probably cheaper than hours of kerosene for my heater.

Raynauds syndrome a friend of mine has this. May be worth checking out.
