I've seen this topic beat to death but not on a 3520 so here it is. When I push in the key for the pre warm start the pigtail lights up on the left side of the dash and a message scrolls across the display saying wait to start but it seems to long a wait. Does anybody wait for the light to go off? Mine will start right up with out doing this but I want to do the right thing. The coldest I've started it was just below freezing. It starts better than anything I've ever owned. I mean this thing doesn't hardly make one full churn and it starts right up warm or cold. Just to sum it up I'm not having any problems I just want to start out doing things the right way. I believe when you're good to your equipment it will be good to you. Thanks for any info.

I think you are fine. The manual does not say you have to wait for the light. I don't know about the 3520, but some JD tractors have sensors that prevent the air heater from turning on at warmer temperatures even though the light may still come on.

From manual:
If temperature is below 0deg C (32deg F), follow the cold weather starting steps in this section.

9. For cold weather starting, use the intake air heater system. Activate the intake air heater system by pushing in the ignition key switch with the key, and holding it there for the required time:
10 - 15 seconds for temperatures as low as -18deg C (0deg F).

15 - 30 seconds for temperatures below -18deg C (0deg F).

Great Question. I've questioned this in my mind as well. I have a 2009 JD 3720, and the same thing. push in the key...LED says "Wait" but I've never waited until that went away...seemed too long. IMO, the manual is not very helpful under this section. I just put in the key for 10-15 secs. and it starts right up. I read somewhere on this site somebody said "if it works, just keep doing that" - makes sense to me.

That is a manual system. You can preheat as long as the battery holds out, but 20 seconds should be plenty unless it's really cold.

I have a 99 4600. When the temps are below 20 degrees, i just bump the throttle, push the key in and count to 10. Have not had a problem.
Good Luck

I only pre-heat for about 5-10 seconds when below freezing, and not a problem in 11 years of WI winters. If I don't preheat, then it starts but passes some bluish smoke for awhile. So I preheat a bit to avoid the smoking.

Like what chuck diesel said. :)

all of you guys have intake heaters as opposed to glow plugs?

I seldom use the intake heater on my 3720. Starts well without it.

I've been told that the newer 3720s, like my 2009, does not have glow plugs.
