My Dad's brother was killed in WWII, there were nine in his family, four served and two others wounded. My father and all the brothers died not knowing for sure where there brother was buried. Thanks to the internet I have found not only where he is buried but what battle he was killed in. He was in the 387th Infantry Regiment, 97 Division, Buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Section H, Row 7 Grave 12. If anybody every visits this Cemetery, I would appreciate a picture of his grave.

If you have google earth, you can see a nice view of the entire cemetery.

I was always fascinated by WWI. Gosh I grew up thinking my country - or better the communists at power - will send me to war one day a la All Quiet on the Western Front.

As a history teacher, WWI always fascinated me - even more than WWII. Involvement in WWII was so much more simple; either you were on the side of good or evil. (Granted, that's OVER simplified, but I am sure you get my point)

WWI was so much more complex. The myriad political alliances, the connections between each powers' ruling families, much less the general distrust of neighboring countries, all led down such a destructive path.

As a young airman stationed in Frankfort in the 80's I had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and visited places like Verdun and the Somme. Seeing the remains of battles 70 years (at the time) in the past was a sobering sight. The human costs alone were staggering and difficult to wrap one's head around.

It seems WWI was one of the last gasps of old world European Imperialism...and the countries with significant power took full advantage of it.

...and I love your analogy of All Quiet on the Western Front...It is easy to see how one could expect to be a tool of the communist machine in the same fashion Paul B舫mer and his mates were used by the Germans..

A great movie about WWI is "Gallipoli." It illustrates how the English sacrificed the Australians in Turkey...very powerful.

cheers

Prokop,

I like the way you start these interesting war threads :)

I wasn't gonna get involved with this one since I'm not that interested in WW1, even though it was basically the prelude to WW2, I don't know much about it.

One thing that peaked my interest in WW1 and I may of mentioned this before, but I started watching a cable tv movie and of course I recognized it as WW1 from the trenches and the unique helmets. But this movie was new and in color, then I heard a name mentioned that I knew, it was Major Whittlesey.

I have a regular customer with the same sir name and since it is quite uncommon I thought maybe they were related. As I watched the movie I became glued to it. The movie was The Lost Battalion, based on an incredible true storey of a battalion of soldiers caught behind enemy lines, led by an inexperienced (formally a NY lawyer) but courageous major. Trapped and surrounded for days, the Germans offered him to surrender, to which he replied "Come and get us"

YouTube - THE LOST BATTALION (4/9)

I asked my elderly customer of the relationship and sure enough it was his uncle! He said when he was a kid he had some of the gear with his name on it that he would play war with.

BTW, If mother Russia sent it's satellite Czech troops to war that would be the "Eastern Front" for us anyway :D

JB.
