"The photograph attached was taken by the crew on board the Columbia during its last mission, on a cloudless day.

The picture is of Europe and Africa when the sun is setting. Half of the picture is in night. The bright dots you see are
the cities’ lights.

The top part of Africa is the Sahara Desert.

Note that the lights are already on in Holland, Paris, and Barcelona, and that's it's still daylight in Dublin, London, Lisbon,
and Madrid.

The sun is still shining on the Strait of Gibraltar. The Mediterranean Sea is already in darkness.
In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean you can see the Azores Islands; below them to the right are the Madeira Islands; a bit
below are the Canary Islands; and further South, close to the farthest western point of Africa, are the Cape Verde islands.

Note that the Sahara is huge and can be seen clearly both during Daytime and night time.

To the left, on top, is Greenland, totally frozen. "

I almost always go to Snopes anymore and should have in this case. Apparently, the details are accurate only to the extent that they are actual photos from space put together to create the image. I was looking at this and wondering if that big of an area could ever be that cloudless? What I found interesting, if it is accurate is the delineation between light and dark, it's pretty fine. I don't know if it is accurate though so won't commit it to memory.

Thanks for pointing the post to Snopes, they are a great resource. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

_RaT_,

The give away to me was the Atlantic ocean FLOOR is shown in the photo. I know we have awesome technology but I did not think we had a camera that could get a picture of the sea floor under thousands of feet of water. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know your right about that too. I saw that and it did not register with me right away. I then was going to delete the post but Mathey already responded so it would have been a collaborative effort to make this whole post get deleted. I suppose if I started talking politics or Amsoil, it could still be. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
