Tractor
Farmall A
I have a small horse farm and I'm looking for a tractor that is inexpensive and will be usable. I have 5-10 acres that i would be farming. It is in hay and cash crop mainly hay. I found a working tractor for $3500 and was curious as to everyone's thoughts on this. We just got the farm and I don't have a lot of funds available. I wouldn't need to use this tractor everyday but I was just curious as to how reliable they are. I have read the threads about them jumping in to gear and all the other negative things. My dad and I have had Many SOS tractors and we have never had one jump in to gear. I have experience with this type of tractor. It is just a matter of using safe practices. I have seen the tractor drive, breaks work, rear 3-point was working, and the power steering was all correctly working when I looked at it. The only thing I noticed that was not working was the gas gauge.

Any thoughts on this would be great.

Thanks

I would do some research on parts availability for it. I don't see many of those around like I do a lot of other old Ford tractors, so parts availability would be my main concern.

Also, did you check to see whether the PTO worked? If not, I'd certainly check that.

I did not. When I go back to look it over again I will ask to connect that and make sure it works. Thanks for the tips.

There are a lot of late model tractors out there that would work for you now and in the future. Any thing you look at, I suggest going to the closest dealer that has parts and spend some time looking at the different component availability and price if they are not too busy. You might even run across a good used tractor that can be financed.

i live the old 6000 fords.at 1 time we owned both styles of 6000s ever made.i still have 1 left.go drive it and go through all the gears on the tractor.and yes the sos do tend to jump out of gear.but ours never has jumped out of gear.its a super heavy old tractor.

personally i'd reccomed against unless you are collecting or want a project, or it's a mint unit, and near free.

I agree with SG. Those tractors were not made long enough to have a population of parts tractors out there. The parts were mostly unique to the 6000.
