I thought yall might like to see a couple pics of the compactor we built for the Landfill I work at. When Tiffins bought the landfill we got new types of rubbish that he D5B wouldnt compact as well. When we ran out of space in one cell way too early wer talkedthem into letting us get a compactor. We run a small working face with not alot of waste comming in so a larger compactor like a 816 Cato which is there smallest was out of the question. Plus a used one sells easy for 60 K. I remebered whe I as little that Dad told me about a Cat skidder wit hDirt compactor wheels working near them on HWY 45. He didnt get to see it up close Then we found a few in some oldleaflets I had. They came either with Landfill wheels or soil wheels. I found out most companies in the compactor business used there wheel loader and skidder lines at first then the wheel dozer lines and special machinery. Cat was the most avaliable ones that were converted mainly the 518. We checked over the intrnet and found that They went in the high 30's to a good one almost 50k. And a set of used Caron wheels was about 45000 and about 20000 for a used Skidder. Dad and I got together and remebered the neighbor had an old 518 Feller buncher that was based on a 518. That was a better choice for a conversion as they didnt have the strain and wear in them from pulling logs all day. They also didnt get alot of use because when it was new the biggest hard wood it would handle was 18 inches and 24 inches in soft wood. We bought it fo 14 000, but the controls all faced backwards and it had a low lift loader boom where the grapple and winch went. He also threw in a large semi Ublade of a 290M wheel dozer scraper tractor. While we were picking it up we were thinking about the wheels and I came up with taking the front ends off of 2 Hyster rollers to make the 4 wheels. The front drums on the older rollers were split to make it easier to steer on the fresh pavement without scarring it. He los through them in on the deal for the tires off the machine back.
We carried the machine over to William Davis's shop and talked about it He helped us cut the rollers up and used his forklift to move the blade out of the woods. William pulled off most of the old hoses and the felling head and rebushed the lift pivots. i carried the steam cleaner there and wer gave the belly pans a washing out. William cut the Centers out of the roller wheels and the back bead off the skidder rims. The welded the rims into each drum. The were exactly a foot smaller than the original tires on the machine so it worked out when we added the six inch spikes. Dad and I talked about changing the controls aroun to make it a Narmal skidder but the that you have been extra work and we also wanted the extra weight of the arms. As we thought of it we realized one of the problems with the Dozer was that on some of the loads we got was light and the dozer blade would just scoot it along as it couldnt break it up only cating it 3 ffet off the ground. So we had william cut the brackets off the shear head and mount them to the 290 M blade after he cleaned it up and added a tall spill guard. That gave us a 6 to 7 foot blade lift hieght. The blade was the same weight as the shear head at 6500 pounds so we came out great on that. Since we get a mix of rubbish we made our front wheels spikes and the back wheels Chopper feet. It works super great grindign up all the rubbish with a 10 to 1 compaction rate. Plus saved wear on the dozer. Ill try to find a few action shots later, and a few of the just finished shots we have of it.
