IMHO, by the specs - they appear to be very comparable tractors. There are links to the specs below.

With that said, there are some major differences. The John Deere 4120 is turbocharged and utilizes practically the same basic engine throughout the 4x20 series. It is also a John Deere engine and in current production as I understand. The New Holland uses a Shibaura engine of smaller displacement - no turbo. As of 2011, I think New Holland
discontinued the Boomer 3040 and replaced it with the 40? I expect both would be good tractors, but I would be partial to the 4120 as I have had one and miss it.

Are you looking at the hydrostats or CVT's or the gear transmission?

I am partial to the 4120 too. I love mine, ehydro. For what I do with it I am now spoiled and don't want to fool with anything else.
As far as specs they are a good match so I would try to sit on both and drive both if you could.
