Comparing a Ford 8N to a Ferguson TO 20.

I recently purchased a 1952 8N just as a collector tractor. The previous owner used the blue silicone gasket material in a tube form rather than the $2. gasket that should be used for the govenor housing and it does have oil leaking. Will replace with the proper gasket shortly, other than that, it is a decent tractor.

I also have a chance to buy a 1950 Ferguson TO 20. in nice shape for $2,000. What are your thoughts in comparing the two. Would use both on my property with a wagon for clean up etc. I see a lot more replacement parts and information about the 8N's.

The Fords 9N/2N/8N are pretty similar.

Harry Ferguson did most of the design work on both.

When Ferguson licensed his patents to Henry Ford in 1939, Ford's engineers slightly modified the design of two sample tractors Ferguson supplied, to use some existing Ford parts and to be assembly line friendly.

After Ferguson's final split with Ford Motor in 1946, Ferguson returned to England and began producing the TE20 with Standard Motor Company in July 1946. In February 1949 Ferguson began producing nearly identical TO20 in Detroit, with a Continental engine.

Ford Dearborn began production on the Ford 8N in July 1947. While the Ford 8N and Ferguson TO20 are similar, almost no Ford part will fit a Ferguson. Ford 8N parts, of new manufacture, are widely available still. Ferguson parts are limited.

Make sure the gas engine is good, no oil in water , water in oil.

The to 20 will roughly compare to a 2n. Draft Hyds. But better rear hub and axle arrangement. Ohv engine, continental .
