When is the last time that you did a Microsoft update. Go to control panel and in the left panel you will see Windows Update. Click it and follow. If you just did an update, then Bill G. is inspecting your computer.

What is the function of the icon? Hover your cursor over the icon without clicking it and information should pop up regarding the icon. Double clicking on the icon should open the program that is using it and give more information.

From your description, it sounds like it may be the Local Area Connection program is displaying network activity. Running your anti spyware program should tell you what programs are accessing the internet.

David, you beat me to the punch:) I was going to ask him if he's on a wireless network. My "little computer" icon in my systems tray runs too, even when I'm not doing anything:D It's connected!

Really, if you ran AVG, Search and Destroy and didn't turn anything up, you're 99.8% (just pulled that number out of thin air) good to go. Odds are extremely slight that you have something going on that's malicious.

Have a good'un,

Frank,
Do me a favor. This will help out a lot. Capture a screenshot (picture of your screen) that depicts the icon you're talking about. You said you were a little computer un-saavy, so here goes directions:

1. Find the "Prnt Scrn" button on your keyboard.
2. If "Prnt Scrn" is written on top (above) something else and a different color than what's below it, you can just press it alone. If it's written in the same color as the lettering on your "Fn" key, you'll have to press the function "Fn" key at the same time to get the "Prnt Scrn" to work.
3. After pressing the appropriate keys to make it take a screenshot;
4. Open Microsoft Word.
5. When the cursor starts flashing on the blank Word page, hit the Control "Ctrl" key and the "V" key at the same time, or right click your mouse and then select paste. Both do the same thing.
6. Now the pic of your screen will appear.
7. Save it in my pics or somewhere you'll be able to find it.
8. Post the pic in this thread of TBN and describe which one you're talking about...we'll be able to see.

Good luck,
Podunk

Another thing not mentioned: If you have your E-mail program on, it's probably looking for new mail (at least that's what mine does).

Frank, as I asked before, please hover your cursor over the icon to get some information as to exactly which icon it is. Then we can move on from there. ;)

Good. That's what we thought, but wanted to be sure. That means something is accessing, or attempting to access, your network. As others have mentioned, this could be anything from Microsoft updates, your e-mail program or some other program. Does your anti-spyware program show you current network activity? If not, I recommend you download Zone Alarm and install it. Zone Alarm is free to use and will tell you each and every program that attempts to access your network. You can then decide if you want that program to be able to access the network any time it wants, only if you choose, or never.
