I currently have an L2950 with loaded R4 tires that are set 5 foot wide (outside edge of the tires). I am considering getting a larger tractor (likely a 4740 or 5040) with a cab and will set the tires to 6 foot wide at the outside edge of the tires (I plan to get R4's in the new machine).

I know that the cab will raise the center of gravity. Is there anyway to tell if side hill stability will be increased with the new machine (with the wider tires) or reduced by the cab in comparison to my old machine? Also, does anyone know how high above the ground the seat bottom is on the 4740? (I suspect that a higher seating position will also increase the perception of lean.)

Thanks!

IF THE 5FT COG'S WAS STABLE FOR YOU, WHY WHOULD BE CONCERNED W/ A BIGGER MACHINE 6FT'S COG? THE CAB'S WEIGHT ABOVE THE SEAT HIEGHT IS INSIGNIFICANT COMPARED TO THE LOAD THAT YOU ARE HANDLING.

Thanks for the note. I certainly agree that the cab doesn't have much weight above the seat height and that the load is important, but all else being equal overall, the cab tractor will have a higher COG than an open station tractor. I am trying to find out if the higher COG would be more than offset by the wider wheel setting.

That's a tough question. If he's a good dealer and he has the model you want in stock he would be happy to let you demo the tractor on your slopes to see how it feels.

....just don't flip it over.

I would think tires filled 1/2 way would get your COG down lower.

Trying out a loaner from the dealer might not help much unless it's got loaded rears. If they're empty, it'll feel a lot less stable than it will with the tires filled. I assume you're planning to fill the rears on the new tractor.

As long as we're just considerin', you might want to consider ordering a set of rear wheel weights to be used in addition to the filled rears. They would help move your C.G. back down toward the axle.
