CONSIDERING 3520,4105 AND 4120

Welcome to the forum.

I have R4s on my tractor and it does load up in the mud. Might as well run slicks. On the other hand, over the course of a whole year they are the best choice for me. Chains do help in the winter.

If you are close enough to Lake Erie to get lake effect snow (I used to live in North Madison and went to school in Geneva and Ashtabula) then snow removal is going to be important. Of course I graduated in 1971 to so it may be entirely different now. Either a front mounted plow or blower would be the way to go.

wolc123,

I will definitely reconsider R1's from what you have said. I do not plant any type of crop, but I would not want to lose any horsepower on the ground either. I have a small 42" hydro mower for the finished lawn around the house and would only use the big tractor for rotary mowing along the drive and the 5 acres around the finished lawn. The aggressive tread would definitely be a benefit for drainage work and snow removal.

Thanks

EdC,
You use to live real close to where I'm at in Berlin Center, so yes we do get lake effect snow. A front blade could definitely be in my future but one financial hurdle at a time!

I have used both R1 and R4 in the same wet/muddy conditions on my lot and they both slip to the point of uselessness. The heavier the tractor the better, as R4 on a larger tractor does better than R1 on a smaller tractor in the same spot.

The traction of the 4120 with loaded R1's is really amazing. I can pull a 2x14" plow, 7" down at 5mph through 12" of standing water on top of thick black mud and not even get any wheel spin. It is kind of cool to look back and watch the wake roll off of the plow. I am not saying this is a good practice but there are always a few water holes that take a long time to dry out in the spring and it is nice to just be able to plow right through them. Considering that you already have a lawn mower, the R1's seem like the clear choice. You will always be able to keep the grass cut up by the house with that, and just wait untill the ground is firm enough so the R1's will not do that much damage untill you cut the rest.
