I'm finally considering joining the twenty-first century and getting
myself a cell phone. Is there anybody out in TBN land, especially
in the Northeast, with experience with Consumer Cellular service
and coverage area? I'll be considering just a basic phone, not a
smart phone.

I have no experience with consumer cellular. I have Verizon, coverage can be spotty in rural areas. I have poor coverage at my house, I had to purchase a booster ($300) that works over my internet connection to have somewhat reliable service.

Did you plan on dropping your land line? That was my plan, but found out I need to have a land line to have the internet. When I called to ask why, they told me it would be to expensive for those that just wanted a land line.

I have found that AT&T is the only service that will give me coverage. I live WWWAAAYYY out in the boondocks and coverage here is marginal. I have no land line service either - never have. I have the very cheapest coverage AT&T offers because I use the phone less than 10 minutes per month. I do a lot more communicating with email. My internet provider is Hughes Net.

Their coverage map (https://www.consumercellular.com/Home/CoverageMap) shows some gaps. I suspect that many of the gaps are in remote areas and are without service from any carrier.

I don't see that you have much to lose by going with Consumer Cellular. You don't have to sign a contract and they offer a guarantee.

If, within the first 45 days, 45 minutes, 45 texts or 45 MB of data use - whichever comes first, you are not completely satisfied with our service, simply cancel and we'll refund your money. No questions asked!

A quick google search shows that Consumer Cellular uses the AT&T network.. BUT in carriers (straight talk comes to mind) you do NOT have any roaming coverage - not sure if that applies to CC or not. (in other words an AT&T customer may have reciprocal coverage in a roaming area while you as a CC user on the AT&T network would NOT have that same coverage)

Hi Tails End, my experience in NH is that Verizon or anyone who uses their towers works best. I used to be with Verizon but changed over to PagePlus, still using Verizon towers but no contract and inexpensive compared to what it could cost. I've been told that you can buy PagePlus phones at Irving gas stations.

Walmart also sells a phone that uses Verizon towers but is also without a contract.

Good luck.

Thanks for the comments! I signed up with Consumer Cellular for a basic voice plan, and phone.
Coverage is marginal at the house here, but good enough to communicate with the outside world
most of the time from some spot in the house. Oh, and according to the info provided when I
signed up, no roaming charges anywhere within the United States.
