I am restoring an old garden tractor and drained a couple gallons of contaminated, old gas from the tank when I first bought it. It's been sitting in an old gas can and I'm tired of tripping over it.

I definately don't want to dump it into the environment and burning is hazardous /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Any ideas for disposal? I can't get anybody a the Dept. of Natural Resources to return my call.

Only hazardous if you're standing right next to the burn pile. Suggest you save it for that next burn of brush and slash......put small quantities in a pail or other container ....start the burn pile first.....after pile is burning throw contents of container onto pile from a distance. You may also want to put contents into old milk containers and just throw the milk containers onto the brush fire. Don't concern yourself so much with pollutants from the petrochemical burn. The quantity you're burning isn't all that much. It's likely more pollutants are emitted into the atmosphere just with the slash burn.

With the price of gas being so high and the possibility of danger when burning gasoline, I would strain it and pore it into my automobile. When you fill up next time leave enough room for the old gas. If you are concerned about moisture in it just add a bottle of Heet to remove it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On the next sunny, breezy day, put it in a pan outside and let it evaporate.

In Minnesota, and I think it may be a Federal thing, but if a place sells new oil, it has to provide a service for you to return the old oil. I believe some of these places will take gasoline also. Not sure. But for the amount, and if your burning old trees and things like that I would just dispose of it there.

Back maybe 20 years ago when I lived in town one of my neighbors use to work on his car while it sat in the street. After a few times of doing this I figured out what he was doing. He was changing his oil and allowing the old oil to run right into the storm sewer. I went over there and caught him and told him if I ever caught him doing that again I would call the police. He was within 4 city blocks of a good size lake and the storm sewer dumped right into it.

I guess what I am saying is I appreciate the fact that you are concerned about it. We need more people like you out there BigPete.

Please do not try to "throw" gasoline onto a fire. Don't hold me to it but the figure of 200 feet/second comes to mind, as the speed at which it will burn. It's been a few years since I attended the Fire Academy. The suggestion to let it evaporate is a good one as 90% will do just that. Bill C

It could be burned by using a metal pail filled with sand and then pouring some gasoline into the sand. Ignition should be done with a burning rag attached to a long pole. Rember that after the burn you will have a pail of contaminated sand.

The best procedure would be to locate a hazardous waste disposal site.

Just as a precaution wear cotton clothing and no syntetic fibers just in case there is a back flash from fumes. Please don't throw gasoline on a burning fire. Burn recovery is not a pleasant process.

Throwing burning gas on a fire was never an option and ruled out before it was suggested. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Think I'll pick up a large, cheapo fuel filter and with hose running to a clean can, I'll filter out the top 90% of the tank (left to settle for some time now). I'll do a safe burn with the bottom 10% where the majority of the contaminants and water will remain.

Thank guys. I suppose there are millions of gallons spilled or intentionally dumped every year, but I'll do my part to keep my property clean and my eyebrows and moustache intact. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
