3-Point Hitch control of PTO whule mowing

I have a new 5 ft rotary mower deck. This is my first experience with the PTO in use. Kabota L1501 DT (L185)
The question is this. Seems that it is not possible to stop and change gears Ie reverse until the mower spins down. When the clutch is pushed in the PTO starts to slow down but the transmission can not be shifted until the PTO has stopped. Is there any thing I am missing? Just don't want to get into any corners I guess.

I assume you're throttling all the way down before disengaging PTO. That will slow it down most of the way and if you're still in grass just drive a few feet and it will stop. I have an HST, but I'm guessing the PTO on yours keeps the transmission spinning so the gear change can't be made without grinding.

I am not familiar with that tractor, but we fixed this on one of ours by putting an over running coupler similar to this:Overrunning PTO Coupler, 1-1/8 in. x 6 Female Spline - 0271148 | Tractor Supply Company

I have contacted the dealer where I bought the mower deck and they want me to but a new PTO shaft with he clutch built in. It looks to me that the clutch shown in the above link should be able to just be placed between the PTO shaft out put and the PTD drive shaft. I might have to shorten the shaft a bit but that would be cheaper than the one from the dealer. Any thoughts on this?
