I wonder if anyone out there has tackled converting a Ford 850 single stage clutch to a model 860 dual stage clutch for live PTO. I know it's a big job but it would be so helpful on my many PTO driven implements. There are donor tractors around for the hardware but I'm wondering how much time and grief went into the project and any pitfalls. Thanks.

If you have access to a complete five speed transmission from a dual clutch 860 or similar model along with the dual clutch setup I guess its doable. Don't know what other parts you would need, but I don't think your 850 transmission has the internal parts needed to drive the PTO from the dual clutch.
I contemplated a converting my 1966 4000 industrial from trans drive PTO to the independant PTO found on similar ag 4000's but learned I would need a comlplete transmission and a lot of other parts from the trans back.

If it was me, and i didn't want to sell the 850 to get an 860.. then I'd swap the complete trans out.. probably need the flywheel too.
Yes.. i have seen a *50 converted to a *60 with the addition of anbout 25-35 parts plus sweat... not sure if any machining was involved. All we knew at the beginning was the case was feffinately from a *50 model due to the stampings.. but the guts were dual clutch.. etc... so it can be done..
As i said.. i'd just swap them... in fact.. if the rear end was good.. I'd just use it all the way back.. IE.. find one with a blown engine and swap in your goodies..

The pitfall is that the parts cost will probably exceed the tractor cost! Unless you can find a donor complete trans + flywheel. Then it's just a swap out.
Just be sure the output shaft spline count is the same. And the brake shaft for the left brake changed from a thru trans to a thru differential housing at some point. Be sure you get the exact case that will work.
