I own an ancient "Roto-Hoe" gas powered chipper shredder. It is belt-driven, powered by a 5 hp Briggs & Stratton. The engine would need to be over-hauled completely or replaced.

Since, I now own a tractor (NH TC30)... it there a "bolt-on" transmission that could mount to the PTO, with a pulley, that I could use to "belt up" to the chipper or other home-made implements?

thanks,

What's the operating rpm of that gasser? 3600rpm?

if so, sounds like near 6:1

Keep the belt drive to dampen vibrations. What are the pulley diameters and in what order are they mounted ? i suppose small pulley driving the big pulley ?
If so, you could reverse the pulleys and speed up the drive. That would allmost be enough, so you could use a 1:1 gearbox, or just bolt a splined PTO end to the pulley shaft.

I am very new to tractors. (about 3 weeks) Its parked in my garage, here in Las Vegas. I have been accumulating "stuff" from craigslist
for a farm that I want to build in Green River, Utah. I just got my water rights!

I have a lot to learn about tractors. I did some searches on gear boxes... how cool.

Someone painted-over everything on the chipper... so I'll do some research on the rpm's... then figure out the correct ratios for the pulley dimensions.

I have a lifetime of projects ahead.

Thanks!

You get some interesting looks, when you drive a tractor on the streets of Las Vegas... everybody thinks your in a parade.

And I'll bet that a tractor with a chipper on the back makes them think your cleaning up a mob hit a-la "Fargo".

I believe I have the identical chipper which I have been considering doing the same conversion (but I'm building a trailer at the moment, and for political reasons that most married men will understand, the chipper will have to wait till another day)

However, I'm thinking that (without removing the belt cover) the pulley sizes might be about 1:3, which would mean the main chipper shaft would be somewhere in the 700-1000 rpm vicinity. If that is the case, I'm thinking PTO shaft with a slip clutch (or shear pin) directly to the chipper shaft.

This would of course still be a very light duty chipper, but it would mean one less engine to fool with three or four times a year when dealing with the annual yard waste and prunings.

We now live in a no-burn area :(

Keep us posted with what you've got going.

Regards
Sherweld

Hey FarmER, My 2 cents: I would think that the chipper is not going to be worth your time to mount to the TC30. If a 5hp engine can handle that chipper, your TC30 is going to burn to much fuel for the amount of work that you will be able to produce. If you really have some chipping to do, you might want to investigate the PTO units made by Troy or some other mfg.

The fuel issue is a good point... but since I need to replace the motor anyway, I was thinking about doing the conversion. I have only owned a tractor for a few weeks, so the conversion might be a good exercise for me.

I'm currently a shirt & tie man... so the thought of getting greasy fingers is very exciting.

I think the shredder is 2800 - 3600 rpm... did someone say belt-cover...NOT. My model was the widow-maker... they couldn't make this unit now. Small people and children could easily become "mulched".

I will take a look at it again ... I like Sherweld's thoughts on the direct drive with the slip clutch... but maybe too much vibration... also might be beyond my skills to get a proper ratio.

I appreciate your comments.... fuggedaboutit! (I spent too much time in the burbs)
