I am in the process of trying to convert 7 acres of former hayfield to a smooth lawn. Field is a mixture of all sorts of tough grasses and weeds which, in combination with rough ground, is making it difficult to mow with my tractor and new finishing mower. Does anyone have any ideas on how to level the ground to make it easier and faster to mow? I am trying to avoid the expense of having to break the soil and replant new grass. Thanks.

The lawn is the 1/4 acre around the house. The rest is a hay field. Grow hay. :)

Or spend about 3 days a week mowing your lawn. :(

That's a pretty tall order. I'm interested to see if anyone has an idea for that.

This property has been a hayfield for thirty + years. I just invested in a tractor and 7.5ft finishing mower. I want it to be a huge lawn. I'm retired and it won't take but a few hours to mow if I can get my speed up. But it's got to be smoother to do accomplish that.

I've been gradually turning an old cornfield into lawn. I found what worked best for me was to knock down the high spots with a box blade, disk everything under, rake it out to remove the rocks, cornstalks, weeds, etc...and seed heavily. The first year was disappointing as it appeared nothing but weeds were growing. Year 2, the grass is overtaking the weeds and next spring I should be able to take care of the rest with some weed and feed product.

Wait till spring when the grounds soft and roll it over and over in multiple directions. You'll probably have to repeat each spring.

How much rock do you have in your soil?

Tennessee conditions very from loam to almost all rocks.

If you have loam or moderate rocks a Harley Rake is your best implement for smoothing seven acres.
