Hi everybody...
I recently got an old 2-point mount sickle bar mower, and the frame is in really bad shape. I plan on building a 3-point mounted frame to accept the bar and gearbox from the old mower, possible with a wheel on the back as a sort of height adjustment. I was wondering if anyone else had done a project similar to this one, and if so, what would be the major engineering hurdles to overcome. Thanks for your time.
P.S. I'll post pictures when (if) I get it finished.

I would be interested in seeing this, as I just pulled an old tow behind sickle mower out of the weeds on my property. Looks like it has been there 30yrs or more. Thought about doing the same thing.

I'm also very interested in this project: hope you're going to take photos :D

When I bought this place there was an old Sicklebar with a 3-point mount machine lying about. It's in serious need of some TLC, but as I'm going to buy a little tractor in a few days I'll be renovating it this spring.

Would a few photos of an existing 3-point mount on an old sicklebar machine be of help?

All the best,

Nick

Here's what my vintage Massey Ferguson 41 sicklebar mower looks like

It's hooked to my 2008 Mahindra 5525.
Bought it for $550 at auction. Put in another $150 for new sickle sections and guards. Be prepared to do likewise with your particular sicklebar.

As soon as the snow is mostly gone I'll dig it out and take some photos.

Flusher: your Massey unit looks a lot more user friendly than mine. the PTO power is converted into a linear reciprocation motion early on in mine, and I'm fairly sure it won't function much past horizintal.

I'm also sure that the sickle parts on mine are essentially buggered - it's in need of some re-building: Wery clunky, all bushes are dead or gone, and the sickles (when not missing) are bent/worn. the safety linkage that protects the sickle is "adjusted" in such a way that it is rigid, and won't offer any protection for the sickle at all.

But.. I'll get photos up here as soon as possible :)

I did one a few years ago, a JD L (I think) #5? it had the knife blade mount. I welded on a couple of pins, and a top connection out of some 1-1/2" angle. I also lengthened the pto shaft. It worked ok, except that they weren't balanced, and when I put it on the 9n, the only way to use it was to drag it...when you lifted it, it would tip pretty good!!

It took me a little too much time to get around to it... but here it is.

It works, but it needs a lot of love. :)

Thanks Nick. While I was waiting for you, I bought a European scythe with a 30 inch grass blade and mowed all 7-1/2 acres by hand. Lost some love handles and about 4 inches off my waistline too.

.....

.....

PS. Still gonna convert mine anyway.

Thanks again.

Sounds good!

I have a couple of scythes: I tend to pick them up at flea-markets when I can , and using them is so calming... but 7ス Acres!! I'm impressed!
