I got a JD 4100 and it doesn't have a float setting for the FEL. It has the stock spool valve or as JD calls it the Selector Control Valve. Without changing the stock valve I wonder if there's a way to add it?

Are you positive your valve doesn't have float, but in case it is not there.

There might a kit to add to the valve.

Here is an add on valve for float. It is connected across the cyl hoses. The fluid moves between both sides of the cyl and return providing float. Don't forget to return the knob to closed position for regular loader work

That's a great valve. Wonder if I can plump that into the return on my pb kit since my stock spool doesn't have access to the return. Here's a pic of my valve controls from the op manual. If it has it, they don't mention it or how to engage it in any of the manuals.

Although not illiterate, I must obviously be blind. I need to test this because I've never felt the detent it states in the manual.

"The SCV is equipped with a float position in order to permit attachments such as blades or loaders to follow ground contours when lowered to operating position. Push SCV lever forward past valve detent to attain float position. "

It indeed does have a float setting! Hallelujah!

The tractor only has 150hrs on it and I bet it's NEVER been used. It didn't come with an operators manual, but did come with a full repair manual for it and the 3pt finish mower. I asked the guy I purchased it if it had that option and he said it didn't and I couldn't get it to engage. I'm more familiar with heavier equipment where those options are clearly marked and easier to engage. After reading that snippet I went back out to the shop and did as it said "Push SCV lever forward past valve detent to attain float position. " . Thought I was going to break it, but sure enough it engaged and stayed in that position. I'll have to break it and get some good use out. No wonder I thought I didn't have it as tough as it was to engage.

Thanks for all the help!

According to the schematic sticker in your picture, the loader valve also has as regenerative mode on the bucket dump... often referred to as "fast dump". Move the lever all the way to the right past the soft detent to engage this feature. Unlike the float detent, the valve will not stay in the position, but will return to neutral when you let off the lever.
