I have a 6 month old coonhound pup. She's quite a ball of fun and always full of energy. I do keep her in the house at night and when i'm at work. I would like to keep her outside more however when i tie her up she barks constantly and the neighbors arent too fond of it. I thought about getting a bark collar for her but i'm afraid if i do that it will discourage her from barking while hunting and a coon hound that doesnt bark isnt of much use. Is this a realistic fear?

I would bet she will quickly learn the difference between the no bark collar and the hunting collar.

We keep a shock collar on our two dogs when we take them outside the fences so they don't take off after deer and run them in to the next state. These dogs know full well when they don't have their collars on. Shock collars "beep" when they shock. After they are shocked a couple of times we can just "beep" them with out shocking them. They know what comes after the "beep" if they don't behave. We rarely have to shock them anymore.

I have used a bark collar on my coonhounds with great success. But I am against chaining a dog out and believe you will do much better keeping the dog within a kennel or fenced area.

Do you just have the one dog? How do you intend to train it to be a hunting dog? And what breed of coonhound is it? When I was a kid, my dad's best friend raised and trained coonhounds, so I've been on several coon hunts at night with anywhere from 3 to 11 dogs at a time. His best dog was a Bluetick Hound named Bob. But he also raised some Redbone Coonhounds and even a few Black and Tan Coonhounds. Of course his were all kept outdoors in fenced pens or kennels except when they were put in the back of the pickup to go hunting.

My two beagle mutleys know the difference between the "No-bark" collar and the hunting "shock/tone" collar.......

I don't leave the no-bark collar on unless it's necessary and I've verbally warned the dog (s).......when I put it on after a warning they crawl to me in submission and they are quiet......

the hunting shock/tone is not noticed by them (I only reserve the shock for off-game troubles, which is rare) and they do their hunting job very well....

I bought one of these last year and have never used it.....I keep it for back-up plan for the neighborhood.......Cabela's: PetSafe No-Bark Birdhouse

Mine are kept outside in a kennel also year round......in the house maybe once every two weeks or so.....

Both breeds I've had no personal experience with, but from the pictures I've seen, they're very good looking dogs.

My son has a bluetick hound for a pet only (no hunting) we have to use a bark /shock collar on her. She will howl all night if we don't. She & we know when the collar isn't on. So far, this breed has been a great pet

Now youre talking about something I do know ... many years of coonhunting. I have a shelf full of trophies and plaques. Many a night running my Treeing Walker to finish him to a Grand Night Champion ... your hound will know the difference ... if its bred into them they will be a "Slober Mouth Stay Put Tree Dog" ... Go with your instinct, read all you can and shoot the S___T with all the old boys !!!

Neither is one that runs off and falls asleep at the base of a tree.

I'm a huge fan of coon hounds...and have mostly owned black and tan. They need their space. Don't have to have it every day but they need to on occasion get out and hunt. Otherwise, they can develop barking and other behavior problems.

The best thing for them, IMO, is to let them run a least once a week and let them run to exhaustion and come dragging back into the home place with all that energy expended...terrific dogs in those circumstances. Love coon hounds!!

I've made many coonhounds night champions and though I rarely let one in the house I can assure you that it will not hurt the dog's performance.

A dog of any breed does his very best to please his master and once he knows what pleases you he will perform to the best of his ability.

I have seen people who have kept their dogs in little cages and refused to let anyone pet them because they were afraid it would spoil them and make them unwilling to hunt. In my 50 years of training dogs I have seen no proof of this belief.

Can't speak of coonhounds but with beagles, keeping them in house seems to not effect scenting while hunting, but does effect their tolerance of adverse weather conditions (winter) and overall toughness physically....but they will have tenderfeet (compared to living outside)......

I don't know if she would have hunted better if she had been kept outside but I was always more than satisfied with the way she ran coons, lions & bobcats. I did tree her last coon for her about 2 weeks before she died. She just didn't have the energy for the chase but after I chased the coon up a tree in the yard I went to the house & took her on a leash & she found & followed the track to the tree & sat & barked tree to give me my last taste of hounddog music. All the dogs my friend & I ran were house broke & would even sleep in the sleeping bag with us when we were out looking for lion tracks when we'd be out over night. Didn't seem to have an adverse effect on any of them.

That's good to know. Thanks. I cant wait for my pup to grow up a little so i can take her out. She's just a hair too young to go out fighting coons. I'm afraid if she gets her butt whipped by a mean old coon she'll be ruined forever

I have a blood red mix, he is a ball of pure energy, loves to steel stuff to make folks chase him. When it's warm{30f or plus} he goes out during the day in a cage/kennel. At night my pups are inside with the rest of the family, after all I feel they are part of the family. I never really consider the hound a barker more of a siren going off :laughing: I have to agree with the others that say no to chains, kennels are much better and seem to help with the behavior of the dog..
