Hey I have 16 machines (delimbers, feller bunchers and excavators) to cork (or weld on ice lugs) next week. I've done quite a few however this company is asking for a procedure on it. I've never seen or been asked for a procedure and I'm not going to pay to have one engineered. I've always had the helper preheat the pad and then depending on the size of cork 1 - 3 passes of 3/16 7018. Anyone got some advice?

Here these are right out of the back a AWS D1.1 book, print them out, fill in the blanks, and you have your own weld procedure, on the WPS you can just use some white out on the joint detail in the lower right hand corner.

I think that should work! Hopefully they don't care that its AWS and not CWB. Whiteout can take care of that too. LOL This CWB stuff is getting annoying how everyone is asking for it. If they were really concerned about them, we wouldn't be doing it in the field in windy sub freezing temps with no post heat on hardened material then sinking them into snow and ice as soon as welding is done. Quenching isn't an issue right??

When working I use to do this all the time. Grab the manufacturer's literature on the filler metal. Write it in the blanks, fill in all the other blanks, may have to crack a few books:laughing:. I would do up a quick and dirty Auto-Cad drawing of the joint detail. Print it out, cut it out, tape it in the box, run that page through the copying machine, if the tape showed up, white out that, and run it through the coyping machine again! Then I would mail / fax it to the engineer of record for his / her approval.;)

Nothing special, it's how a guy from the trades gets things done when he's thrown in the office.:D

There are several AWS procedures with prequalififed joint details and welding parameters for hundreds of materials and welding processes available in the AWS Code D1.1. See Section 3 or AWS D1.1 in its entirety. Pick one that the joint detail, material, welding process and electrode matches what you are welding and maybe put in the details of preheat or cool down etc. on the WPS form that ShieldArc attached This should satisfy your client.
ASME also has some prequalified WPS for use on pressure piping, but many clients wont accept them for some reason.
All the prequalified procedures on involve simple processes carbon steels (A-36, A105,A106 etc.) that have been proven for many years with thousands of procedure qualification records (PQR) where folks have actually ran the process on test coupons and recorded the temps, voltage and amperage, heat input with various sized rods. AWS was first to grant prequalified status to certain joint detail. ASME just recently joined the team with prequalified allowances for many carbon steel processes.
You shouldnt have to forge a document in order to satisfy your customer. You may need to borrow or buy your own copy of AWS D1.1 ( buy is recommended ) if you dont have one. Anyone in the welding business of structural fabrication should own a Code book.

Funny how the engineers work. I was asked to go to a power plant and help with an Inconel application on rollers from a coal fired burner. The engineer gave me the parameters for the job they were struggling with. We were using a 300 amp power supply with external feeder and the wire was .035. We messed with it for an hour and they said to just forget it. The welds were cold and ugly. So I said I just needed another minute and I set the parameters to where the wire ran perfect and it was 30% higher than what the engineer had spec'd. He like the look and said, " I'll change the spec." The point is, They can run you through the mill to get what they want but they can change it on their end in 4 words. :confused2:

Besides tauting your product, what does this post have to do with the OP's question, and with his need for welding procedures?

He's a paid advertiser and one of the reasons this forum is free. ;)

But does this allow him to advertise anywhere and anytime he wants, in whatever thread he so desires? Looking at the posting behavior of other advertisers, I would think the answer is no, that advertisers are still expected to follow the terms of use.
