Corn Planting Question

I have about 5 acres that I want to plant some yellow field corn on. I always buy corn to supplement my goats hay during the winter months so I thought just for fun I would raise some corn myself. Here is my question. Would the feed corn purchased from Tractor Supply work? I planted a handful in a pot to make sure that it would germinate and it did. My concern is that it is possibly a hybrid that might not make anything. The day that I bought the corn the district manager for the local Tractor Supply was there at the store and I asked him. His reply was that it would not make as good a crop as seed bought at the co-op but it would make. Any input from you guys?

What do you want to raise it for? That will tell what kind you need to plant.

Feed for goats to supplement the hay I feed them in the winter. This is probably more to play farmer than anything else. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In that case go with a good seed corn. The corn you plant won't have as good of a yield if any at all. Most seed corn is pretreated with resistance to bugs, worms, etc. Raising seed corn is completely different from raising field corn.

I was thinking the same thing too.. but even a young farmer I talk w/ says.. if you going spend the time prepping the ground and fertilizing.. why wouldn't you get good seed.

The obvious reason is $.. seed is expensive.. I'd still like to try it for some deer food plots. I'm glad you already did the
