What is the brand/type of antifreeze I should be running in my diesel tc45A?

"Soundguy" on another thread recommends the anti-cavitation additive CNH has to offer, fw-15. I don't think my tractor uses sleeves in the engine-do i still need to use this additive?

Some people are using the TSC Diesel Fleet Service antifreeze. The color in my tractor is green and it is from the factory. I plan on flushing out the engine/radiator. I'm not sure what color the Fleet Service is but if it not green is it ok to use?

Thanks

It's more important to use and anti-cavitation additive than to worry about the color. I did quite a lot of research which ended up telling me advantages of the gold and orange antifreeze are very minimal if they even exist at all. It's primarily a marketing scheme.

My NH dealer carries Fleetguard ES Compleat that contains the anti-cavitation chemicals already. It comes in both EG and PG (ethylene glycol and propylene glycol) formulas, so you can take your pick. It also comes in prediluted and mixable. I used the EG & mixable type (50/50 with distilled water) because that's what I could find.

The cavitation happens in modern high-compression diesel motors. When a cylinder fires it creates a shock wave that travels through the cylinder walls and into the antifreeze. When the shock wave hits the antifreeze in causes tiny bubbles to quickly form and then disappear. This happens on the outside of the metal cylinder walls in the antifreeze. The problem is it turns out the bubbles forming and disappearing are abrasive to the metal and slowly eat it away. If this continues it can cause the cylinder walls to become porous and antifreeze will leak into the cylinders right through the walls.

Other manufactures of modern diesels that are not wet sleeve recommend an anti-cavitation additive. It's debatable whether the size motor in our tractors have the cavitation problem or not. Generally the larger the motor the larger the problem.

The choice is yours - I'm not saying you would be a fool to skip the anti-cavitation treatment. Reasonable people could disagree on this one.

Thanks for the info. I also read on one of the threads that if your anti-freeze already has the ac additive in it and you add the additive it is harmful to the engine. That is why you are supposed to use the test strips.

My owners manual say's nothing about having to use an additive. Just a permanent Ethyhol G. based antifreeze and change it yearly.

In all reality most people probably never change their fluid and if they do they just throw in the standard cheapest Wal Mart anti-freeze.

That's your answer. Everything else is just speculation.:)

Agreed... it would not occur to me (owners manual or not) to change nice clean anti freeze yearly. I wonder - does anyone actually do this? Or at least anyone with typical non-farming low yearly hours....
