Tractor
kubota l39 tlb
I have a Kubota L39 TLB and shopping for a root grapple. The Tractor/Loader/Backhoe weighs 6987 lbs. The Loader has a lift capacity of 2767lbs at max. lift height.
wanted to know if compact type grapple would be strong enough to stand up to push weight of tractor and if the added weight of heavier skid steer graples would be to heavy for loader. Does anyone use a grapple on l39 tractor and would like pros and cons of setup. Thanks for any info

I am a fan of having multiple grapples. I have a 72" rake grapple, a 74" L bottom 2 lid grapple and a narrow 48" L bottom single lid grapple. Each has their place, but if I could only have one, it would be the 48". The lighter grapples can lift MORE. As far as the lid goes, it only holds the load on, I don't recall dropping anything with the single lid grapple. The rake has a single wide lid with many teeth and it is very good for cleanup and back raking, up against streams, etc. The wide L bottom is good for pushing into brush, as it clears my tires, at least on the 60 HP.

Try to get a grapple with a large vertical opening, some of the grapples out there only have a 30" opening which is too small for your TLB. I would try to get something over 40". The Rake Shop makes good grapples. Faver makes good grapples. There are many good brands.

Thanks Tomseller for info i was wondering about best grapple width and vertical opening size. i will try and keep grapple weight close to 72 inch bucket weight now on loader.

Let the thread run for a while, you will get lots of good advice.

The total weight is an important consideration. But, it's not as important as the width of the grapple as TomSeller mentioned - IMO. My JD110TLB is very comparable to your L39 and my +900lb 66" grapple doesn't really change what I can lift or dig up. Reason for this is simple, really.

The heavy stuff; stumps, root wads, log bundles are never really lifted to full height for the most part. That stuff stays low... maybe a foot, foot and a half off the ground. Limbs, brush, grass and light debris that you move and pile up and burn, etc. - that stuff is light. Big wads are only 4-500 pounds. So, the lift capacity of the loader is >3,000 at 18" and at full height you've got 1,800lbs even with a 900lb grapple.

But, I've wanted (might still do it) to cut the grapple down to 60" width at least. The reason for this is leverage and twisting of the loader arms with heavy, unbalanced loads that occur often with large, woody debris and rocks, etc. The wider jaw of the grapple allows the load to exert more leverage on the FEL arms and frame. Especially, when the load is not well balanced and one side is heavier than the other.

X2 with TomSeller as well on the jaw/clamp opening dimension. Widest is bestest.

In my experience, the 2-cylinder clamp system works best. Working in the woods or cleaning up debris or rocks, etc. clumps, piles of stuff is uneven across the grapple. A single clamp won't hold onto the low stuff as well and it will drop out/off the grapple.

My $0.02

A compact grapple like the EA wicked grapple would be great on your tractor. Your tractor is a hair heavier than mine and has a little more lift capacity. I would get one ad wide as the tractor, probably 66'' or 72."

I would buy a heavier duty grapple. I have a L4600 but with my skid steer rated grapple I have managed to twist it some using it to skid backwards putting a lot of leverage on the clamping lids. Nothing major easily remedied and I don't use it improperly anymore, but had it been a light duty grapple I might have experienced significant repair/downtime. I have a lower capacity loader than you but I can lift some pretty substantial logs. If it couldn't lift it I could just cut it a little smaller. As stated with brush you will never max out your lift capacity. I went with the narrowest available 60" to save the weight. I have not been hindered by it being to small. I think a larger one would be a detriment in most situations. Even when raking sometimes it will hang on a larger root. if it were 6 feet wide and hung up on the outside corner it might really twist the loader arms.
