Cost of 250 gallon tank & pump/meter system.

Exxon shut down the very convenient station that my wife fueled up her diesel at. Now, about once/month, I have to drive it to the extension office where I volunteer once/week to fuel it up at an Exxon over that way. This, and having to take cans out about every 3-4 months for my tractor have prompted me to think about getting a 250 gallon tank to supply her car and my tractor. The 250 gallons is about what we use in both vehicles/year.

Anyone bought a 250 gallon tank recently to know the approximate cost? Also, what sort of pump/meter system do I need to be able to pump and to be able to tell how much I've pumped?

I know about the 250 gallon, metal fuel oil tanks. How about a poly tank? think some of you are using them on diesel.

I bought a 275 gallon poly tank a few years ago and mounted it on a stand. I put a filter on it and 10' hose with fuel nozzle all from Tractor Supply. It has worked great. I had $50 in the tank, another $75 in the rest of the set up. It lives in the corner of my barn so its out of the weather. I get the local co-op to fill it twice a year and its very convenient.

As for metering the fuel, I really don't worry about it but the tank is marked in 25 gallon units and is transparent.

I like the simplicity of gravity so this is the route I went. I don't have a good pic but you can see it in this pic of a play house I made for my little ones.

I was thinking about making something similar out of a 55 gallon poly drum. The drum originally contained the wiper fluid I loaded my tires with. Any one know it this type of drum would work to hold diesel? The drum is rated to hold the flammable wiper fluid, so I figured it would work with diesel.

I bought a 300 gal overhead steel fuel tank on a stand about 5 years or so back at an auction for $75.

The blue plastic 55 gal drums (used to ship various liquids) are OK for diesel. I buy them used for $5-6. So for about $30 you would have your 250 gal of storage.

Perhaps the sentence should have read,

"Can't legally burn off-road untaxed diesel in the car."

One warning about fuel stored in these tanks-many friends I know who use them have had fuel problems-mostly moisture and critters (algae).

You have to cycle fuel through them often so it stays fresh and clean and dump additives in them just to be sure. The same thing happens at fuel stops that don't move a lot of diesel.

My previous shop had a gas boy and a steel tank. We got bad fuel from not moving enough fuel. Results can be a truck stranded out in the middle of nowhere with a plugged filter.
