Posthole Digger Cost of a 3pt Post Hole Digger..new and used

Does anyone have a ballpark dollar amount on a 3pt post hole digger....either new or used?

I'm looking to put up a good-sized barn and need to dig the holes. There probably will be other applications as well, such as cattle fencing.

New - $475-$600. Depends on the Auger size and brand/quality.

I got a Speeco with 9 Inch Auger for $500 on sale two weeks ago.

Not sure about used. As always, it depends on the condition.

Excellent question. I have been quoted over $700 for a Rhino digger with a 9" augur. I don't know enough to know if this is just a very heavy duty rig or not a good price. I have about 100 holes to dig for fence in fairly good dirt and then need to sink some building uprights. If this is a heavy duty system do I need one? Not trying to hijack the thread but can't find too much discussion about PHDs.

If you can find one used $300- $350, beware though that if the PTO driveline or U-joints are bad it could cost you a lot more in labor and parts.

If your soil does not have too many big rocks or hard clay these things work pretty good. Around here we have great extremes in soil, so for the rocky hard ground I hire a pro with a hydraulic down pressure auger, they charge me ~$7 per hole. My other place has nice sandy soil where I can use my own machine without tearing it or my little tractor up.

I just did around 60- 70 holes for my fence. The soil varied from nice dirt to mucky clay. It was moist clay though so I think it was easier to drill. It kind of gummed up the auger a bit but my 26HP tractor didn't really struggle on any of the holes.

A few big rocks needed to be loosened but in general I got off easy. Not sure I'd want to be drilling thick clay in the dry summer, or heavy rocks at any time.

You can probably get a Speeco or King Kutter/Leinbach for a reasonable price at a local farm store. I suspect the Rhino is a little on the mid to heavy duty side.

I agree with the others, 600-700 will get you a PH digger with an auger. TSC and other stores sell them. For a used one I wouldn't pay more than 300 since you may need to replace parts on them.

It might come down to what kind of dirt your are drilling into. If you have even small rocks, you need a heavy duty auger with teeth. Bigger rocks and you will need an auger with carbide tips. Just the 9" auger can be from just over $100 for a light duty one new, to $1000 for one with carbide teeth. Light duty 3pt PHDs are as little as $500 with auger. There are hydraulic augers for the 3pt, too, that can be as little as $1600. Hydraulic PHDs have a reverse gear that you will really appreciate when you get your PTO PHD stuck in the dirt.

Hey Chuck, Well if your not in a hurry you may find one used for a good price... I just got one this summer from a guy that is moving, It was home built VERY stout large gear box that made for an auger, It came with a 12" & a new 24" auger also had an exstension to drill to 5'... But it was missing the PTO shaft which I got at agrisupply for less than $90. I have used it for a deck I built for my B.I.L and it works great /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh I found it in the local classifieds for $200 It was a great deal.

This same guy was selling a john deere dozer a Lorain crane with dredge bucket (built his own 6 acre pond) ,case TLB etc,etc...50+ years of farming and equipment and moving to florida..
